Marco - To answer your question... after Cryppie and I installed the pipe, I had about a 1/4 tank of fuel. . so yes I did run down and get some fuel... but I can say that I haven't had a problem with this station yet... even though a bad dose of fuel is possible.

David - I did call yesterday and leave a message for Jerry but I haven't heard back yet. I am really hoping that he has some tricks up his sleave.

Kev

Well, I have already driven about 165 miles on this tank. . and it seems fine. I'll have to go fill up again in a couple of days... so hopefully that is the problem.

Could it really be that likely though??

Kev

Just to make sure... but did you check your wastegate like R. ebel mentioned? A stuck wastegate or bad fuel are the only two things that would make sense in this situation.

Yeah. . I checked the wastegate and it is still closed. I have a boost elbow installed right now that also prevents the wastegate from opening... . so it should be ok.

Kev

Restriction, yep!

There's got to be a dead cat in one section of that pipe, or in the muffler. (Actually had that happen on a cooling tower job once. Crapped out a 1K ton chiller).

Muffler Directional?

TKilgore, I doubt you'd notice much difference with the muffler either way. It's straight through.

K-Arts, pick up some hot dogs, we're all comin' over this weekend to help you figure this out :)

Kevin, after I installed my Jardine 4" system, I noticed (slightly) faster spool up, significantly lower egt's (once the engine and exhaust are up to temp) and reduced peak boost. Like you, I believe the reduction is peak boost is due to reduced back pressure. Since I'm already making 40lbs plus, this is not significant in my case and more than offset be the lower egt's

(about 100 degrees). In your case the Jardine system is totally unwarranted and of no value as a performance enhancement UNLESS you are planning to bomb. If this is the case, leave it on.

I too have noticed much more low boost black smoke now that summer is here. I haven't figured it out yet, but exhaust restriction is a possible cause.

I'll be here... . the Beer and Food is all on me.....

Ohhh yeah... hvac. . that's right, your on the west coast... . how dare you get my hopes up like that... . geesh... that one will cost ya... LMAO

GWS - As far as Bombing... . I have DD2's, and EZ box on setting 2 and Bill K's transmission setup in my truck. So I figured between the injectors and box... I thought that should be bombed enough to utilize the extra airflow... or am I wrong? I guess this high altitude is really taking a beating on me... . geesh

Kev

Maybe it is the weather

Kevin, I noticed that my boost doesn't climb quite as fast since the weather started getting hotter. When I installed my EZ box, the temperature was in the mid 70's to mid 80's on any given day. The humidity wasn't bad, either. Once we started getting into the high 80's/mid 90's and higher humidity down this way, I noticed that spool up wasn't quite as quick. Maybe I just got used to the EZ, but I'm betting it was the weather. This is pretty normal with our trucks in warmer weather, as I understand it. Let us know what you find out. TIA

Kevin, try the EZ on #3 again.

The only reason my EZ box isn't on the 3rd setting currently is that on setting 2 is that since the weather has started warming up, I smoke like a freight train. So I like the fueling to be delayed. But I guess it can't hurt to see how she responds. .

I don't remember... . which way is setting 3? While looking at the box is it on the left or right?

Though I think that Bill Kondolay has figured out what my problem is... and it leads right back to not having enough back pressure for this high altitude. The truck is breathing too much and can't seem to burn all of the fuel... which helps explain why I smoke so bad and why I have no bottom end.

Again... Bill K is DA MAN!!

Anyone know where I can purchase a good 3" Mandrel bent exhaust to put back on the truck? I can't decide if I want to go back to the stock pipe or find a better one.

Thanks For the support guys... . another $35 well spent!!

Kevin, that theory of Bill's is very interesting, as I had very little bottom end smoke prior to installing the Jardine 4" system. Then, as the weather warmed, I noticed a lot of black smoke at low booost, so much so that I have to be careful with the throttle when starting from a standstill. Mind you I'm only at 900ft ASL.

I wonder if others have experienced a similar increase in low boost smoke with the 4" exhaust. If this is typical, I would much rather go back to the 3" and the associated higher egt's. I'm still in the process of replacing the IAT in case this is the problem. Then I will test the fuel pump return valve and MAP sensor.

Smoked like a freight train this spring, smoke like a forest fire now that it's summer :D :D However, the smoke is controllable, I've just got to be patient when accelerating in town (oh but it's hard :)) One other thing, mine smoked like crazy with just the fueling box on before I changed out the exhaust system, IMO, the exhaust improved the smoking... ... thing.

Density altitude

K_Arts it occured to me that you installed your exhaust system just as the weather turned really warm here in the Rockies. I'm starting to think that your problem is just one of "density altitude". This term is used by aircarft pilots to calculate takeoff performance. For example using an E6-B9 flight computer [a circular slide rule] I calculated that on a 90 deg day at 5000 ft your engine would perfom as if it were at approximatley 8300 ft. and 59 deg. due to the less dense air. Less air and same fuel = smoke.

Some other density altitude examples:

1000' elev and 100 deg = 3900'

3000' elev and 100 deg = 6100'

6000' elev and 95 deg = 9600' (my hometown elev)

9000' elev and 90 deg = 13000'

Just food for thought.

I'm really struggling with the "not enough back pressure" theory, don't intend to step on any toes but it dosen't make sense to me.
