Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 4" or 5" Exhaust

which exhaust system should I get: 4" or 5"? what are the benifits and drawbacks of each? TIA

I didn't listen when everyone said to go 4"... I love the sound of a straight piped Cummins, but the 5" is just flat out PAINFUL on the eardrums. I had to put a resonator on it... I would imagine that a 4" system would have been more livable. that 5" tailpipe sure looks pretty tough back there though!

i love my 5" wouldnt trade it for anything, once that 6" chrome tip is on it is going to look even better. if u are under powdered i have heard that such a free flowing system hurts overall power up to a certain point. but i got it anyway bc i dont plan on being low on power for long.

I think you need to ask yourself what am I going to use my truck for, and how much noise can I tolerate. If you have a wife you should think of her as well. When towing the exhaust can get loud, and annoying. It you plan on taking vacations with the family or long trips,re-think your position. I could never see me with a 5" system of any make. There would be way to much deep rumble and drone.

If you are young,dumb and full of fun. Then you probably don't care and just want the loudest exhaust around to get the most attention? If that is the case then 5" sounds like you.



I have a 4" system and it is at times to loud for me.

I am looking at another exhuast upgrade. I had a 4" system for a long time and I was very happy with it. I am now considering a 5" system but I have heard the 5" is considerably louder than the 4", even with a muffler. Is this true?

to each his own, i tow, i take long trips, i have people in the truck with me and i am young, NOT dumb and full of fun. personally i like a truck that sounds like a semi that is why i knocked the baffle out of my muffler b4 i put it on, now my buddies with the baffle is a great deal quieter, to each his own. it is your truck you have to decide how you like your truck to sound. a mufflered 5" system to my knowledge is a great deal quieter than a straight piped 3" system.

IMO. .

There is not much of of a sound difference between mine and Proram's custom 5" as far as loudness(Scott's twins do muffle the sound a bit more though,which is common with twins). The 4" we put on mine has a nice even roll of thunder out the pipe and doesn't have the dreaded drone some complain of here(I attribute that to minimal joints as we used a long section of 4" straight from the down-pipe to the custom built tailpipe at the rear). There is minimal HP gains(only a meager 7hp as found by Joe D)so it will come down to one thing,"Looks". Do you want the massive look of the 5" out the side or will the 4" look suit you... ..... I love my 5". Its straight piped and only has about a 50rpm area that it gets a tad of resination to it and thats only when im part throttle. Plus like others have said 5" just looks bad as hell

4 or 5" exhaust

I have had both on my 12 valve. According to what I have read and in working with John Forbes developing their 5" system, most people do not need 5", unless your add a plate, injectors, gauges, etc.

My personal experience with their 5" system is that is is even quieter than the 4". This surprized me. I do like the sound and I believe their is a noticable difference in h/p and pulling power.

I am curious you all with the 5inch exh. How does the 5inch down pipe fit?

tight but it fits along the firewall and engine. it is reduced goign into the turbo to whatever you have eight the stock charger or something like an hx 40 with a bigger outlet.

I just got Rip's 5" System less the down pipe(Down pipe came with the PDR twin turbo set up). I can't wait to get the truck back together and check out the thunder!!

mine is a 5" downpipe but it has i believe is a 3" inlet where the pipe is reduced to fit the stock turbo. the 40's have a 4" outlet and something like the b1 can have 5" outlets to allow for a true 5" system. if i am wrong someone correct me, i am goign off of what i have read and remember.

Exhaust Size?

The hx40 does have a 4" out let and that is what i have and after the 4" downpipe, mine goes right into 5" no muffler, sounds awesome, trying to figure out where to buy a nice 6" tip? Later!!Oo.

The www.bigexhaust.com 5" I have, has a 4" down pipe. Drone was horible at around 21-2200RPMs straight-piped. Put a Dynaflex resonator on it. Worked great. Turbo spools MUCH faster, EGTs came down about 50*, and made the truck a little more responsive. Very happy with it. Before I installed it, I sprayed some high-temp aluminum colored painted over the aluminumized steel pipe to help it last longer.
