I have a stock 3" exhaust system without muffler and gutted cat, and have alot of resonance in the cab anywhere from 35-70 mph. I plan on getting the 4" exhaust in the future and was wondering just how loud it might be without the muffler. Right now whenever I'm going down the Highway, It gets pretty anoyying when your trying to listen too the radio( when it's hummin in your head ). But I still like to hear it at a low down growl when you get into it :D, Thanks for any info :)

oh yes, it's loud and somtimes annoying!!

EMERALD5. 9:

i have the JRE 4 inch straighet piped and it is very annoying between 2000 and 2300rpm. before and after that it sounds great:D heads really turn when i open it up. i'm hoping that if i dynomat the back wall it will clear up!... ..... james. .

I am in the market for a 4" exhaust also, however I do not want extra noise. I hear that Jardine is not to bad on the noise department. Can someone give me some input on that. Mainly I need to get EGT down 75 to 100 degrees. So which is the best exhaust to both lower EGT's and not add alot of additional noise? SNOKING

I have a standard cab also. I also have a Jardine exhaust. I swear I think it is quieter in the cab than the stock exhaust. No drone at all. I've heard almost every brand of exhaust systems and I think the Jardine is the quietest.

jardine

Just installed a jardine for a guy a couple of weeks ago. the fit was good and noise was reduced(inside the cab anyway:) ). I put a bully-dog on mine but I think the jardine fits better. Oh well live and learn. It seems to me that alot of the rattle was gone from inside the cab after the 4" was installed. I don't have a problem talking to the person next to me or listening to the radio. As far as the "drone" I've never noticed too much in mine. Im still thinking about putting dual 5" stacks on mine. Wonder what that would do the noise level ;) :D :D . Doug

Did you order your 4" system from JRE without the muffler or did you just put a section of 4" pipe in it's place. I want the growl out side without the resonance in the cab. Think I'm asking to much from one or the other. :(

i got mine with the muffler. the alien's took it about 3 months later. my buddy welded a piece of sheet metel he rolled in it's place. it still had the drone with the muffler on but it's worse with it off:D it just jives me an excuse to drive with the rpm's over 2300... . james

I have a drone with my Bully Dog system from 2300 to 2500. But I spent most of my time cruising below that so the drone is not annoying. I love the sound when I get into it.

Hello Emerald 5. 9,

I can answer your questions, I spent a lot of time and money testing mufflers untill we found one that would give great sound, and lowest restriction, with out sacrificing interior cab noise.

You can order my system without the muffler but I don't recommend it, because it will drone really bad 2000-2300 rpm.

ThankYou, Ted and everyone

Hi Ted' Ive seen that your highley recomended on the TDR. I've heard from other posts that your system is very good and I'm considering buying the 4" system. Does it make alot of diffrence whether the muffler is all the way towards the back, or all the way forward. I heard that makes alot of diffrence in the noise you get in the cab. :)

Yes that is correct, there is a lot of technology that goes into the design of an exhaust system, With 22 years experience designing and building performance exhaust systems I think I have it nailed.

I was one of the first to design a True bolt on system that works, others have followed and substituted parts and quality to offer a cheaper system, i. e. thinner gauge tubing, glass pack mufflers, stepped transition from turbo to 4" tubing, weaker clamps, etc.

Hope this helps.

I love my JRE

Works just like Ted said it would. Quality and fit is perfect.

No drone... . sound is just right.

Some kid followed me into a parking lot today and asked me which 4" system I had on my truck. ;)

thanks, Ted

maybe the time but....

I have a question...

What is the point of getting a 4" if you do NOT have the HX-40? The max size of the pipe coming out of the HX(Y)-35 is 3", so what is the gain of having 4" when only 3"'s will come out???

Thanks again everyone

I remember all the effort it took the first time to tackled the OEM muffler and tail pipe tryng to get them off, it wasn't fun at all. And when I finnally got the sections appart, I just layed there with sweat rolling in my eyes under the truck looking at what I had done  , just to hear the diffrence of a straight pipe. This time (when I get a few more buckaroos built up ) I'm going with the 4" JRE exhaust system and leaving it at that. Can't wait:D

TxDiesel kid, to answer your question,

The reason for 4" pipe no matter what turbo.

It is all about pressure drop, by stepping up the pipe size after the turbo outlet which is only 2. 6 inches, then tapers to 3 inches and we taper it to 4 inches, each taper creates a pressure drop causing a vacuum affect, this results in quicker turbo spool up, higher boost, cooler EGT, quicker turbo cool down, More HP and Torque, etc.

Only those who have done can appreciate it.

Even the Nay Sayers of the past now have 4" exhaust.

Mr. Jannetty,

Thank you for clearing this up. I just had my exhaust job done last week, and it only cost $50. As a college student, I am on a VERY limited budget so this was good. I have been told that putting a bigger (read: 4") on the HX(Y)-35 would cause lag. Thank you for answering my question.

Thats untrue, it will not cause any additional lag, as least in my case on my HY35. But I didn't really go after the 4" for performance, I went after it for sound. The performance was a "bonus".

JRE 4" vs straight 3"

This may be difficult to answer since sound is so subjective, but I'll ask anyway.

How does the sound from the 4" JRE compare to a straight pipe 3"? I've heard a few straight 3" systems, but never had a chance to listen to a JRE.

TIA

Justin
