I am looking for information regarding an auxlilary trans between my Getrag and transfer case. I am looking for a 2x reduction. All of the units I have seen in the 4-wheel drive magazines will not handle the Cummins torque. Therefore, I am looking for a large truck type of unit, Spicer, etc. I do not carry a lot of weight when I am off road (1,500 pounds max), but I do want to go slower over the rocks and other rough stuff. My current crawl ratio is about 40 with 3. 55 gears and the Getrag. I notice there are a lot of 4x4 trucks listed in the forums, but I have not seen much discussion regarding gears, transfer cases, etc. Does anyone have a web site, book or vendor that is knowledgable about driveline stuff.

Ray,
The only thing I can think of is Gear Venders Under/Over drive unit. I lot of members have this unit. It will hold up the torque of our Cummins Engines. Better be sitting down when you see the prices though . #ad

Have you checked on a US gear underdrive I have one it will hold up. I don't think Gear Vendor has a underdrive Even if they do it won't go between the trans and transfercase. The US gear turns out pretty clean.

From the info that I have seen both of the two units listed above only work in 2wd. I have been looking around for the same thing. Anyone have a extra transfer case that we could mount behind ours. Check out petersons or fourwheeler in the april issue. They went in to detail about several t-case swaps and listed low range kits for them. I looked for the 241 but as usual they didn't list it.

Ray,
Try Hicks 4X4 Specialists in Ponoma, CA (Southern California) 800-999-7674. They are specialists in this area and handle a lot of military stuff as well. Good people to deal with and if they can't they will steer you on to someone who can.
Good Luck

It is in and I take delivery tuesday 3/28!! 2001 ETH 6 speed, Quad Cab, SLT, 4X4, two tone Flame Red/driftwood satin, Camel Leather, Short Bed, 3:54 gears, with every option. Current mods being planned - Pyro/Boost guages, CPC box, BD exhaust brake, 4" exhaust turbo back, Line-X bed liner.

Ray- one possibility if you are willing to go that far is to replace the whole t-case with a divorce mounted unit. Then you could mount a Gear Vendors or whatever between the trans & t-case.

Major job.

Mike

Hello

The US Gear unit will work in 2 or 4 wheel drive. Another option that is being kitted is the low range box from a 203 grafted on to a 205, letting you have low 2 wheel as well as low 4 wheel. I think the kit is around 750 if you have the 'cases. I am assuming you already have a 205 since you have a Getrag 5 spd? Assuming you arent punching the throttle wide open in low gear it should hold up. With reasonable driving the Atlas 2 may also be considered.

I just looked it up again, I remembered cause I emailed them for the opposite, an overdrive that goes between transmission and transfercase, they don't make one. Any way if you want to see it its in march 2000 Petersons 4 Wheel, its called Klune-V's crawler box. They have two models the stronger is said to hold 1200 lb's of torque it has a 2. 72:1 ratio or a 4:1 ratio. 1 800 222 3619

You mention a kit costing $750. Do you have a vendor, phone # of who make the kit. I can pick up a 203 box easy.

Hello Ray

The article is in the Feb 2000 Four Wheeler magazine. The company is Off Road Design, web address www.offroaddesign.com.
They don't list an adapter for the Getrag but you might check Advance Adapters, they might be able to help.

The US Gear under/overdrive is the only one you can use while in 4x4 mode. It mounts between the trans and transfer case and you can split any gear at any speed.
The Gear Vendor unit mounts behind the transfer case making it usless in 4x4 mode. Also you can only split gears after you are going faster than 30mph.

There was another brand called the "4-to-1" underdrive, it used (I believe) the NV241HD planetary assembly, and it mounted between the trans and transfer case. I've seen it in project vehicles in Four Wheeler and 4WD & Sport Utility magazines. Sorry I don't know more about it. I know I saved a magazine article about it, but I left a lot of boxes of stuff behind at my folk's house when I moved.

In addition to MikeR's post, the US Gear "auxiliary transmission" can be purchased in either the 20% overdrive version or the 20% underdrive version. A very heavy-duty, gear driven unit.

Hey All:
There are options here!(options that are "tried tested and true" on the really rough stuff). There are 2 different 4 to 1 kits (that I know of) availiable for the NP 241HD, that will only affect LOW RANGE, leaving high range for flying down washes - whatever.

The other and absolute best option is to switch to an Atlas 2 Transfer case. It if FAR STRONGER than even the venerable NP 205, it is a gear driven unit (as oposed to our chain drive units), and the tourque capacity is WAY beyond an NP 205 and WAY, WAY beyond that of an NP 241. It is also cast of a far sronger material and the case is much stronger.

This unit (the Atlas 2), also gives you alot of options, such as; A 4. 3 to 1 crawl ratio in low range, Stock High range, 2 wheel drive low - and high and some other stuff not often used, but handy. You get 2 levers sticking out of the floor instea of our one, and yes, it will fit perdectly in the Dodge mounting position. The set-up has been used on Dodge Rams, Cummins powered too - just give Advanved Adapters a shout, they will set you up with every thing you need.

I can vouch for the quality of their products, as I am certain (IMO) some of the boys who run the radical, super-modified Jeeps who hang out on the TDR - Sam Houston, The "Scrambled guy"- (sorry I got your handle wrong, I just know you have a h@LL of a nice CJ 8) to mention but a couple. There are suprizingly many of the "big Dawgs" on the site, guys who have the rigs you see on T. V Rock Crawling events. Guys who I respect for thier knowledge on this subject (everything 4 wheel drive). Perhaps you should be talking to one of those guys, I am sure that they have forgotten more than I know about wheeling and build-up's.

I sure hope I have not offended any of those folks by mentioning names, as I sure could use thier advice and would like to be able to draw upon thier wealth of knowledge in the future, hint, hint:). If I have, I am very, very sorry. I was just trying to help folks out - the TDR.

I hope I have been of some help. I am just a rookie, but I guess I just happened to "wander" onto a tread I knew a little about.
Just my $1. 02 (I live in Canada - exchange rate).
