2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 4-wheel drive not going into 2H right away

A buddy of mine called me regarding his 99 Dodge 4x4 with the cummins that I talked him into buying.

His question is regarding shifting from 4H to 2H while moving. He can shift into 4H from 2H and it engages fine, but when shifting to 2H from 4H it does not disengage for a few minutes.

He said he called the dealer and the dealer said it may be a vacuum line. I told him I would post the question for him and get some real input.

Personally I don't even shift from one to the other while moving, but then again I have been accused of babying my truck... ...

Sometime my 98 does the same thing. All I do is let off the pedal put it into nuetral and then back into drive. I usually have this problem when it is cold outside below 25 deg f.
 
I don't believe he has a vacuum problem, he has no problem going into 4WD. IMO he probably has to give it time to disengage- no load on the engine at all. I find on mine if under even the slightest load, the 4WD will not disengage right away, it has to wait for no load. So I just take my foot off the gas for a second or two after shifting out of 4WD and it works fine. Hope this helps.
 
4 Wheel Drive

My truck does the same thing (02 auto) I just relax the gas a little and then back on, and it switches. It did the same thing in my 97 GMC Yukon. I think thats just how they work
 
I just worked on one with the same symptom. There was water in the vacuum actuator on the front axle. I thawed it out and blew the water out of it with compressed air. After trying it again, it still didn't work properly. I wasn't able to blow all the water out of it. I ended up replacing the actuator to fix it, but if you wanted so save a few bucks, and had some time to kill, remove the actuator and put it in a nice warm place where the water will evaporate out of it, then put it back on. Of course this advice only works if you have the same problem... .
