I am starting to rethink my exhaust mods... . Here is the question. .

I don't plan to bomb my truck beyond the BHAF, EZ, and possibly DDII's. Will the 4" turbo to Tail gain me ALOT over just replacing the muffler with a straight pipe? I know there is some pressure drop differnce with the 3" stock down pipe, but if I am never going to go to a bigger turbo / exotic mods, will I gain anything over the straight pipe? Also, If I do go this route, should I leave the resonator on? As far as EGT's are concerned, I don't pull big loads with my truck like some of you guys do. I pull a car trailer (about 2000 lbs empty) and with the heaviest car I would pull, I would say 7000 lbs total... ...

Thanks for any comments/opinions.....

I am wondering if my $400 plus beans would be better spent on DDII's... .

Thanks,

I went this route for a while... I removed the resonator & OEM muffler and replaced them with a walker muffler. This worked well, no drone and really freed up the exhaust. I think this is a practical route for the budget minded.

If I were you I would get the DD2's and go with a the stock pipe as you mentioned or install the Walker. I have upgraded my system to a 4" Jardine (love it), but I did this because of the mods on my truck warranted it.

Jetpilot, when you say no drone what exactly do you mean? I don't know if this set-up exists but I would like to find a system to free up my exhaust, yet make it more quiet on long trips. I'll sometimes spend 14 hours at the wheel and the sound gets to me after awhile.

Haney, you do not need a 4" exhuast even with the DD2's and EZ. The 4" systems sound great, but I would spend the money on injectors. Get a good muffler and put it in the stock exhuast. MHO.

Well I guess "no drone" would be a matter of opinion:D. But for my $. 02 worth I removed the OEM muffler and resonator, installed a walker muffler in their place and the sound wasn't bad at all (again my opinion)... . But then again I have been around a lot of jet engines in my time and maybe that has some affect on my perception of drone:(.

The Jardine exhaust with the magnaflow muffler I have now sounds good to me. So if you have heard one like it and you think it drones then I wouldn't go with my opinion.

Haney,

I have a JRE 4" on my truck and love it. The 2001s issue is mostly the down pipe which really sucks. I think you would be happy with a four inch and it makes a good bit of different in the middle of the summer towing 7k.

BTW I am running 275s and an EZ.

Ted

Well,

I think I will replace my stock Muffler with a straight pipe for now. I have access to some schedule 5 sst pipe and it will not cost me a cent! Should I also get the resonator while I am in there or leave it?

After getting my gauges and BHAF in, I will make sure everything is sound, and then go for the DDII's. If my clutch is liveable with the power and I don't have to upgrade the clutch, then I will add the exhaust later.....

How does this sound for a plan????

If you don't want drone, I would install a resonater. When I got my Jardine exhaust, I ordered a 4" resonator with it. The cost was 35. 00 including shipping from Jardine. They use Magnaflow mufflers and resonaters. There is no performance hit with a flow through resonator and it is very quiet.

Charles

Looks like the consensus is that a truck outfitted with BHAF, EZ, Boost Elbow, and DDII's can perform OK with a staight Pipe?

If this is the case, I will cancel my 4" exhaust order and call piers tomorrow... ... .....

The only questions I have now.....

1. Life span of the stock clutch

2. To remove the resonator or not... ...

Anybody want to share other experiences?????

Thanks,

walker exhaust

If i install a walker muffler in the stock system what is the noise different over the stock system? I have an EZ and 275 on order and on the bubble with the exhaust. Some guys say its great while others say its not needed.

Haney,

From my experience I would recommend leaving the resonator in. Since you already have a resonator and not a cat, it's no big deal.

I have a straight 3 inch and the drone can get tiring at 2,000 rpm for hours on end. I need to find an overvalved owner who wants to donate his old resonator, anyone?:D

4"only if you have temp probs!

The biggest advantage to go 4" is to reduce EGT Temps.

If you're not going to be towing much and do not HAVE to do something to reduce temps then wait and do it only if you have to. 4" vs 3" adds very little hp, but really helps reduce EGT's.

What to do:

Low-end = Injectors, Delivery Valves, AFC Spring and AFC Adjustments.

Top-end = Torque Plate, Gov. Spring Kit

EGT's = high flow Air Intake Systems, Turbo, Exhaust housing; pipe size, straight through muffler.

Good Luck !

its your money

spend it. If you want a 4" system, then get one. I got bought the Jardine sys. For power,no. For looks,no. For heads turning and sound YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

resonator

steve, i've got a resonator gathering dust in the shop, off my 01. 5. i know i'll never use it. you are aware that it is 3" inlet and 4"outlet??? the short pipe from the resonator to the muffler stock is 4" with a 4" inlet muffler, and 3" outlet. PM me if you want to work something out.....

Taking off your resonator is'nt going to make a difference in restricting your exhaust flow since it is a straight through design anyway, loose the stock muffler and I think you'll be happy and have alot of extra $ in you pocket to boot.
