I towed over 1/2 of my 65k on my 11 HO Dually with 3.42's towing 28-29k. *SERO issues other than getting the load rolling on a bigger grade. *I towed in 5th with rpm's at about 1,750 at 60mph about the same as my 15 with 4.10's in 6th. *
Towing up to 28K or so with AISIN and 3.42's are a no brainer! *Heavier 4.10's are the way to go. *Honestly don't see the need for 3.73's.

and my 2014 2500 running at 10K GVW with the 3:42 that completely scrambled at 14K miles and required the complete assembly being replaced kinda proves it.

Just curious how you know that the ratio is what caused it to "scramble"......further, what exactly "scrambled" in your diff?

Don't know, and don't know. But I do know it was in the shop for two weeks, and instead of just replacing it with a complete assembly, they ordered all the parts separately rebuilt it in the shop, including the axle housing. There's a lot of reasons why I don't like the 3:42 differential, but I was the lucky one that had one scramble. My number one complaint, your truck runs at a low RPM (1000) while cruising at 50 mph in auto, forcing you to paddle shift to keep the RPM's higher, where your throttle reponse is much better, and no pinging while the trans (68rfe) takes it sweet time downshifting. Just saying,*

Reportedly AAM axles/differentials (some of them) came from the factory with gear lash/gear mesh misalignment. 3.42:1 ratio doesn't reduce towing capacity. I don't think the problem was specific to 3.42 axles. But i wonder if the 3.42 might be cause for some of the launch shudder that some experience. Transmissions upshifting too soon when launching uphill (even when tow/haul engaged)?

AISIN eliminates the shudder with 3.42's. *I towed about 26-28K combined with my Son's 15 SRW with AISIN, it took off on a grade with zero issue!

I haven't experienced the launch shudder. Just remembering this thread where people who have trucks with Aisin and 3.42 experiencing shifts that lug the engine at 1400 rpm when launching uphill.
I was curious if it was because Aisin has its own control module.

It appears there is no reason to blame the ratio itself for your failure. It could be a number of things.

that's interesting , my 03 with a manual, tall 19.5's and a 373 ratio does about same . It seems to work well for me, so I think that setup would be good on the highway?

The NV5600 and G56 manuals have one overdrive gear (6th). The 68RFE and Aisin AS68RC or AS69RC have 2 overdrive gears (5th and 6th). That's why the 4.10s are much more livable with the 6 speed automatics.

my last truck was an 04 w/373 ratio.my 2016 3500 drw has 410 ratio I pull a12000lb 5th wheel.
at 65mph my04 was at 1800 rpm. at 65mph my 2016 w/410 ratio is 1900 rpm.
I,m glad I got the 410.

^^^^^ The 3.42's would have been a much better combo for you. For that weight most likely you could have towed in 6th or 5th the same rpm you are now running in 6th. 3.42's with AISIN are the ticket with GCW up to 28K.

Just look at the chart. Benefit would be same performance with MUCH better mpg.
