47RE transmission Slips Cold and at Start

My engine is stock with 130K miles and the transmission has started slipping when I first start up (1st or reverse). After waiting several minutes, the transmission starts to engage. Sometimes after first pulling off the trans surges mildly or "skips" a bit... then after a short time this problem goes away.

I have been told by a friend it may be the converter drainback check-valve on the cooler line ??? Any thoughts on this?

I have never had the bands adjusted and wondered if that might be part of my problem??

I don't have any "upgrades" on the engine and I have not pulled my camper too much, but I am afraid I may have a serious problem looming and hesitate to tow untill I resolve this problem!! TELL ME IT'S AN EASY FIX!!?? i would appreciate your help. Thanks

Easy Fix.



Just put your transmission in Neutral while warming up the engine, for about 90 secs. . Then everything will be purged and pressurized.



If you have a diesel, the 47re is the standard. 42's i think come on a gasser.



If there is 130k on the stock transmission, might be a good idea for a transmission shop to look it over anyways. They can sometimes fix stuff up cheap like clear cv codes etc. .

Thanks tp... You are right about it being a 47 (I edited the original post!) What do you think about adjusting the bands?? Any advice there??

Dunno if bands would cause what you're describing. If you have a band out of adjustment, the problem would happen all the time, probably more once the transmission got hot and the bands expanded a bit. If you havent done any adjustment that you know of, I believe the bands are supposed to be adjusted every 50k or something. I think that info is on dodgeram.org somewhere, I dont know where...



I currently have my truck in the transmission shop getting some upgrades. With rising fuel costs I want to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of the engine, and my transmission was the best place to start. From what Ive heard, a transmission upgrade from stock is -very- much worth it... .

I don't think a band adjustment will solve the problem. Wouldn't be a bad idea though. Mine were WAY out of adjustment when I bought the truck. Never had that problem.



The drainback is probably it.
