Has anyone heard rumor of DC coming out with a 440 hp Cummins engine by the middle of this year ? My dealer says this is going to happen, and further more there is also a strong possibility of a new 4500 series pickup also. Just wondering if this is true or not.

Click on the link at the top of the page that says

**** Dodge and Cummins Announce The New 325/600 High Output Engine ****

and read about the new engine.

I am well aware of the "new" 325/600. I was checking on the status of my recent order for one such engine in a 3500. That's how I was informed of a possible 440 coming out mid-year. They also mentioned it might be hooked up to a 6 speed Borg Warner, but weren't sure. This could be all b. s. for all that I know, but the 4500 pickup I've heard from more than one dealer. I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard about this.

Since we're all having fun speculating, I'll dive in too! my guess is that for those power levels they'll have to put it in a class of truck that has different emissions standards than what we have today. So maybe the 4500 2 ton or larger truck will be available with a monster Cumnins. that would be cool. better yet would be to use the 5. 9L B engine dialed up to that level.

That’s right, the newly introduced QSB5. 9-380 is now available …… for your boat. The new 5. 7 produces it’s 380 hp at 3000 rpm’s and was developed in partnership with Mercury Marine, to be marketed under the name of Cummins Mercruiser. Isn’t it something what you can do to power if you have ambient water as your cooling media, rather than air? The ISC 8. 3 engine is sold in the marine market up to 480 hp, where 350hp was it’s street limit, and now that has been cut back to 330 hp.

Cooling, the engineering challenge of the next millennium. found this on another site

I agree. 440 hp stock sounds like a complete pipe-dream to me. If they were going to make a 4500 I'd think they would be more likely to go with reduced horsepower (say 250 or so) and gobs of torque (700? 750? 800?). Just my opinion.

To realistically get to 440 HP for a production truck they would warrant would require at least the M-11 engine (eleven litre). I think they have this engine dialed up to about 500 HP in motorhome applications.

The platform would indeed have to be very heavy duty. At a minimum, something like the Freightliner FL-60 platform. Since Diamler-Chrysler own Freightliner I suppose it's possible they might re-badge the FL-60 and call it a Dodge 4500 or 5500.

The RV crowd is wanting something that can tow the ever larger fifth wheels that are being produced. Even a 3500 Dually can be overloaded with some of these rigs.

IF they decided to do this, expect the price to be high. The entry level FL60 is around 70K.

440

Remember the 6. 1 liter Cummins that was talked about a couple 3-4 months ago? I would guess that the 440 h. p. cummins is really the release of the new 6. 1 liter, 440 h. p. HEMI V10 OR does 6. 1L = 440 ci. ?

Just my humble guess.

I was reading on Auto.com that DC is coming out with a new 6. 1 liter Hemi V8 in 2005 for the heavy duty trucks. Light duties will continue to use the 5. 7L Hemi.

6. 1 liter is closer to 406-408 cubic inches

The 4500 series trucks was being talked about in 01 by D. C. reps its been in THE WORKS for a WHILE. It will happen I'm sure. In 01 the 3. 73 gear was also in the works etc. As many more things were or are. The Reps were forewarning dealers in 01 about bigger lifts etc. Were even suggesting to seperate the BIGGER trucks and autos shop wize. That MORE and larger was in D. C. plans.

I had work done- dealer running boards. The lift at the dealer was not up to the task. The reason I brought it in was the install would be a PITA on the ground. Turns out the work still was done on the ground. Probably could have done it- 7200# on truck, lift nameplate was 7500#. So bigger/heavier would affect some dealers shops, because it alreaduy is.

Its affective lots of shops. Trucks keep getting bigger in general. But D. C. was letting it be known in 01 that MUCH bigger was coming down the pipeline. They were suggesting a TRUCK shop seperate from auto. The dealer I worked at bought 5 acres acroos the street in 02 and loaded it with rentals and used cars. The dealer owner said that in the future That was only HALF the reason he bought it and that one day a new seperate TRUCK shop only would be there as well as bigger TRUCK sales.
