Cummins QSK78

The death of Cliff Robertson

The more I look the more I keep coming back to and liking the Springfield 45 XD over the rest. Going to have to head to the gun shop and see how some fit my big hands. I want a 5 inch or longer barrel and there are few that I find That I like other than the XD.

This is a South American gun that is pretty much set up to target configuration. The NRA magazine gave it great reviews in the accuracy and value departments. I am not saying buy one, just look at many brands, take your time before you buy.
The new PT1911B is a sweet piece, I just worry a bit about resale value later. For a couple hundred bucks more a guy could get a Kimber with similar mods--not identical, but close. The Kimber will always be worth more than the Taurus... . not to take away from the Taurus performance, which I hear is pretty good.

Either way, a hot rod 1911 brand new for under $600 is a great price.

*Some are on gunbroker for under $500... . crazy good deal*

Why do you want a 5 inch or longer barrel?

If its because of the myth out there that everyone thinks the short barrel 45's are not accurate, you are wrong and that is all the more reason to find a range/gun shop that you can have the opportunity to fire the guns so you can see for yourself, we have a few gun shops with ranges that let you do this.

I looked at kimbers and they look alright, But way more than I want to spend at 1100-1200 new. I would like a gun in the $400-$600 range max. Used is ok in my book.

Just remember you get what you pay for. The Llamas and similiar brands are more attractivly priced but reliability, feeding issues, sever accruracy issues, are some of the problems Ive encountered.

Bill,

I love the XD's. But I carry a 1911. Why? Simplicity. Springfield has their GI 1911 out there with a 5'' in your price range.

I always keep in mind, that gun was designed to be carried Cocked and Locked. Drop it in the mud, it'll still run. It was designed back in the late 1890's because the government wanted a RELIABLE auto loader for WWI. It was finally put into production in... you guessed it... 1911. Knowing that every time I pull the trigger with a round in the chamber it will go BANG, is a very comforting thing.

I'm not saying that other guns out there won't, but the reliability of the 1911 design is unmatched.

Keep the ideas rollin, I'm learnin here

That is why I made the obvious statement above. That It will not leave any good choices out.

I personally never buy a thing without a long research period that is why I am liking all the input you are all giving me.

I had never even heard of some of these companies. I have been a one track Ruger revolver man "Any black Red or Super Hawk"for years because of the unmatched reliability and strength of them.

I like the idea of the extra capacity pistols but if reliability interfers with that I will go 1911 model. That is why I asked for help and info.

Keep the ideas rollin in guys. I am headed to town today to check out what the local gun shops have.

I just picked up a very nice clean slightly used Rock Island Armory 1911 . 45 - paid $290 for it, with 2 magazines and the carry case. Checked out the various reviews/reports on that make/model, all looked quite good.

I wanted something fully serviceable for knocking around out in the woods and casual usage, without being hyper at the cost - this one seems to fit the bill just fine...

In 45 ACP I owned/own Springfield Armory, Colt (series 70 combat commander) an EAA "carry comp" and a Sig Sauer P220.

They've all been good to me.

I'll also add to that list:

Glock (in 45 is a BIG gun unless you get one of the compacts)

H&K

Taurus

Sig P220 single stack great shooter

Para ordinance 45 dbl stack little fatter

L. A. R. Grizzly 45 Win Mag (1911 on steroids)

They all shoot great

I checked out the local sports shop and they have all the springfields on sale for $499. 99. I am thinking of going this way. But first I found a used Kimber for 400 but don't have the model # yet and need to get it from the guy so I know what it is.

The SA is a good deal for $500, but I'd like to know more about the Kimber.

Youre most likley going to get better sights etc on the Kimber. If your eyes arent great, that might be a BIG difference. My vision is 20/10 (better than 20/20) and I dont like the standard GI type sights.

Take the $100 difference and buy some ammo & spare mags. I like the Wilson-Rogers mags.

JM. 02

The kimber sold the day it was listed and I was too late.

What are thoughts on Ruger kp345?

I found 1 for 375 with 200 rounds, case ,2 clips.

I read a few sites and they seem to be a popular gun too.

I say go with Springfield TRP or Operator.

The best . 45 on the market as far as I am concerned. They shoot great right out of the box... Next, smooth, no kick what so ever. The only draw back, they have a bull barrel,

Non standard like the Mil-Spec and or Colt 1911. But they will last,,, shoot straight, and get the job done.

I am not a fan of non-American Firearms for obvious reasons,,, would not even consider them…. In this case, Made IN the USA stands tall. OK,,, Kimber is the "MOSTLY" made in the USA...

You get what you pay for ... .

AH, if only that tired old, worn out phrase was only universally true...

But fact is, it too often is NOT!

For instance:

That's the same phrase the Ford and GM owners use to justify the higher (than Dodge) prices they pay for their trucks - are they correct? ;):-laf

It's sorta careless to casually rationalize cost = quality - t'aint always so!

+1 Gary

I'm a fan of reliable firearms; where they're made and cost means nothing to me.

Apparently I'm a fan of firearms from all over the world.
