Has anybody had any experience with Northern's 45 Gal. Aux. Fuel tank?

(Their # 349004) From the photos on their website it is a diamond plate, across-the-bed tank, but it doesn't give any dimensions. I'd like to mount it in front of my toolbox, standing on edge instead of flat, but that might not be possible unless I were to change the outlet and filler tube. Anybody have this tank? Here is the link to the tank:

Robert, think you would be better off to purchase the tank you need rather than mount one in a manner other than the manufacturer had intended. Here is a sample from one source. DeeZee makes aluminum tanks also. I don't recall their dimensions.

The one you picture is meant to be mounted under the tool box. I installed the 65 gallon combo aux tank/tool box, and am very happy with it. very good quality. I just wish I had flushed it to remove all the crud left inside after the construction. I had to change my inline aux filter after only 2 or three tankfuls.

sdalton,

Is that possible with that unit? On my steel 100 gal tank the inlets extend beyond the top by about 2" to allow for air space. No way to really flush so I just bought extra filters.

mine is aluminum. It also has a drainage outlet at the bottom. I guess i could drain it, I just dont feel like getting several gallons of fuel all over the place if i try now

I have the DEEZEE 110 gal. tank. It came with a 3/4" NPT fitting on the side, but I had a friend weld in a 3/4" fitting at the rear as I have mine placed between the fenderwells. I was going to flush it before use, but a closer inspection showed that the inside appeared spotless. I'm using mine like QRTRHRS, with a external pump and a Goldenrod water/fuel seperator. The Goldenrod filter isn't bad for the $$$ and filters down to 15 microns. I am my own re-fueling station :D .

Thanks Qrtrhrs, Sdalton, Big Saint... It does make sense to order what I need rather then try to weld together something... and I never could weld Aluminum worth a &#(!.

I didn't want the flat tank at first, cause I thought it would raise my toolbox too much and interfere with seeing what was behind me, or in the bed etc. etc. , but I can't seem to find exactly what I am looking for in an upright tank either. Oh yes... and I'm tryin' to keep on a budget.

Anyone know the dimensions of the 45 gal aux tank from northern tool, I have 8 1/2" space below my cross bed box.

Robert, How about one of the "L" tanks? Would one of those work with your toolbox? Everyone makes them so the price is usually reasonable.

I received an e-mail from Northern, the 45 gal. tank is 60" X 9" X 20 1/2.

Yeah, Qrtrhrs, I've thought about the L tank... haven't priced one yet though.

Shipping on the 45 gal tank was listed as $111. 00 (!!!!) I e-mailed them back and complained about the shipping... haven't heard back yet.

Check out this link http://www.transfertanks.com/ . They have some nice looking uprights, the price with shipping isn't bad either. The most that you are looking at, for a 70 gallon upright with shipping is around $380. 00. Could be less, depending on your location.

Thanks BigSaint, I like the looks of that transfer upright ATT4070. Just one question tho... the site says... Liquid transfer tanks are designed and manufactured to be used as a transfer tank solely for the private use as diesel fuel or non-combustible liquid transfer system.   Liquid Transfer Tanks are not designed for use as an auxiliary fuel tank connected to the vehicle's fuel supply system.

Of course, connecting it to my fuel tank is EXACTLY what I plan to do... any problems with this plan?

Has anybody had DOT or EPA or DMV or CHP problems after plumbing these tanks into the fuel system?

You should be DOT legal if your tank has a return line. That is if you use it that way. Mine just dumps into my main tank. But It does have a big tag welded on the side with a bunch of numbers saying it is Dot legal for use as an aux tank. I dont think you will have any problems, your just a little truck. The only problem might be if you get pulled over pulling a huge trailer and they decide to give you a hard time about everything.

I've about decided to go with a 70 gal. upright, aluminum tank. Anybody know how much 70 gallons of fuel weighs? The tank weighs 68#.

These sites seem to both sell the same tank. Shipping is UPS so I'd save a lot over truck rates. That seems to be the difference between the Northern tank and the upright one shown in Qrtrhrs's earlier post, which is the tank on the above links. It looks AOK to me.

Robert, I had the same DOT concerns, that's why I just added the pump on top. I doubt you will get even a second look from most LE when plumbed into the tank. I think the only problem that may occur would be if you caused a spill and the set up was to blame, such as if you were in a M. V. accident.

I thought diesel was slightly over 7 lb. s per gallon ??? Either way, just spliting hairs. I have 110 gal. and the mighty Cummins doesn't even know it's there. You'll want to keep it full though, my truck rides great when the tank is topped off but feels like there are two heavy weight mud wrestlers engaging in a 'no holds barred steel cage' match when half empty.

I wouldnt run "red" if I had an external tank.

State troopers might see this as a "job site" truck (least here in NJ) and would most likley want to dip your tank.

I dont have an external tank, sooooo... ... ... ... ..... :D
