Talked to my son tonight and he told me he saw an interesting older Dodge truck yesterday, Was a '70 era truck with a 453 Detroit installed. He said it had an interesting Boost setup. It had both a turbo charger as well as a super charger. They were plumbed into the lower sides of the block as that is where the plenum area is located. The owner told him it was rated at 170HP and 410 ft/lb of torque. I didn't realize the 453's were 2 stroke.

My boy said it was a good looking installation. I know, it's a detroit! Just wanted to pass this on. Anyone have any experience with these engines?

The little 453 "Bumble Bee" is a great little engine. Being a 2 stroker, it has the super charger for the scavaging effect. You know what the turbo does... .....

I get the Power Wagon Advertiser publication, and in there I saw a guy from Colorado who put a 3-53 Turbo in a 1948 WDX with a six speed Allison. Real cool. #ad

The US military has (had) a whack of 453's with aluminum blocks - they are a light engine that was designed to throw away - these can be had very inexpensively (like well under $1000 for a brand new on - surplus - look in a mag called Rock and Dirt). I think one of these would be slick in an old M37 (a Cummins would probably be better tho).

The 453 was a great little engine - very common in marine applications and skidders. I ran 2 boats with them and they are economical. Jimmys are slick because parts are plentiful and CHEAP - GM believed in modular designs -> a 471 head fit on 871s and 1671s took 4 of them.

On a jimmy, the blower is necessary to get air into the block through the bottom of the liners at BDC. The fuel is injected (big surprise) and the valves (some 71 series had 4 valve heads) are used only for exhaust.

The biggest drawback about Jimmys are the noise and they aren't as fuel efficient as a 4 cycle diesel. We have a GM 692 Silver Series in one of our boats, it is rated at 500hp and is 552CI - it burns like 10 GPH. I think I'd rather stick with my Cummins based on the fuel economy to horse power ratio.

There is a guy out there who puts 3-53's in M-37's. I have never seen one but they must be cool. I understand a fair amount about engines and such, but for some reason, the detroits always seem to catch my eyes and ears #ad
I love old designs that made sense, the first time I finally figured out that these engines were modular I thought it was a lie, couldn't reason with those ideas, made too much sense #ad

I'm guessing they are called Jimmys because they have 'GM' cast on the side???

Hey guys, the WDX model or WM300 whatever your prefer used the six hole allison fluid flow #ad
I hope to put a 353 in a wdx one day with an old spicer 5 speed granny (I can get the model and perticulars on this if you want, let me know).

The M-37 conversion is much easier so I hear, and a man named Dennis Sherman knows all there is to doing this. I think that he uses clark 205 trannys in his conversions.

If you want more info e-mail me or post again. #ad
