Hey Fellas, I have a 97 4x4 2500... . just put a used DTT 47 re with shafts, v body, triple disc converter. transmission guy went through it prior...

question is the amount of drive line slack there seems to be. .

from neutral into gear ( forward or reverse) there is a substantial clunk with a bell tone... . I always hit neutral before anything as I know there can be issues that arise... . is something awry... or heading that way... . If i had to pin point the noise I'd guess in the tailshaft or possibly the t-case??

Any help would be appreciated ... sorry if there is a newbie thread that I missed... ...

Have someone set the parking brake and shift from forward to reverse and back (with foot on brake, too) while you look underneath. That loud, you should see the motion. There's a chance it's the rear diff.

Mid 96 was the switch to the RE.

Check for slack in your drive train and verify were it is at. Yes, the builder could have left too much slack in the trans setup but check the other things before going that route.

It could also be one of the U-joints in the drive shaft, or one of the adjustments in the transmission is not correct
thats what I was wondering... ..... if there was an adjustment on the transmission that I should be looking at... ... ... any ideas what that could be?

No, there is no adjustment on transmission short of taking it apart and shimming or replacing parts.

Trans to t-case coupler, t-case, u-joints, rear end all could have slack in them. Nothing you can adjust, only replace.
