ok i have did alot of reading about this problem.. and not sure whats up. its a 96 ram 2500 all stock, no mods. most of the time the transmission works great shifting od ect... then out of the blue it will want to die coming to a stop, i give it a little throttle then it is fine,,,,may not have any issues for awhile. sometimes at startup it will die when put into drive or rev, again i ride the brake to keep it from dying then its fine again...is there a way to tell if its the converter going bad? here what i have tried, when its acting up going to drive and reverse, i have pulled the trans relay i can here the relay click when i take it out and in...but no help any advice would be great thanks.

What is your idle speed? AC on or off, to include defrost position?

My old 12v was susceptible to a low idle and causing ether same issue. Bump it up a touch and the problem was solved. Over time the throttle linkage wears where it rests on the stop. It takes a 10mm wrench and a little persistence to adjust, but only a few minutes. Follow the throttle linkage on the pump, it’s on the rear and kinda under it.

i installed a upgraded solenoid kit...had no effect, shifts nice in every gear, over drive comes on and off with the dash button, about every other time i goto put it in drive or rev its locking up, if i --- two foot it it will come right out of it and work great....update a day later, the converter is staying locked up most of the time,,,and the last time i started it,put it in rev went right in...but the converter slowly started to lock up until it died... as if it was a manual trans that you let up on the clutch until it died.....

its at 900rpm with the ac on,,,,

900 is more than adequate.

This one may be a bear to troubleshoot over the internet.....

Does the converter lockup at 50mph like normal? I don’t think it’s gonna be the converter. The computer controls OD and lockup by grounding the two solenoids within the trans. Unless you had a short to ground activating the solenoid or the computer is grounding those circuits, I don’t see that really happening.

i had someone suggest to jack up my rear wheels and put it in gear without touching the brake to see if it locks up...it does not when i apply the brake it slowly locks up until it dies,,,,, not sure what that means

a little history, when i got the truck the guy i got it from, thought the converter was going bad, because it locked up sometimes going into fwd or rev and at stops...but not all the time....i put a noise filter on it, and it ran for a month no issues, the it went for a 8hr road trip with little trouble but a couple of lockups,,,i put the kit in the trans, and here we are....

"The problem was a worn out spool (valve) in the valve body, fluid would leak past and lock up the converter."

The answer supplied by SnoKing was VB related, but there were steps in that post to troubleshoot electrical vs VB issues in that post if you step thru that whole post again.

If you decide on a Mystery Switch IMO, if you jump over to mopar1973man.com you can sign up for a monthly membership for a few bucks, there are articles on how to build a mystery switch to control lock up. It's on here as well somewhere, their format is a little bit easier to find the "article" it's not a post.

You need to figure out if it's electrical or mechanical and go from there.

I have see posts about bad internal harnesses, so when I did mine it was recommended to swap the harness with the new parts, you should be able to check the harness.

Don't have a shop per say.. but if I was looking here is how I would find a shop...

Goerend is a very good supplier, they do not do builds anymore, but their installer list should be pretty solid shops, but I don't know about where these places are, it's a starting point if you need a shop.

https://goerend.com/installers/

Find one near you and see the reviews of those shops, you can also call Goerend and see if they are still a recommended installer in case there was an issue and they were removed but web site not updated.
