2001.5 ram 2500 with 5.9 cummins and 47RE 3.55 gears and has 137k on the clock. Previous owner had it for 4 years and just used it as his daily driver that's about it besides the occasional driveway plow. I know he told me he had never changed the transmission fluid and who knows if the original owner ever did as he used it for landscaping and some plowing here and there.
I have no major reason to change the transmission fluid besides it smells a bit burnt and is a bit dark in color for my liking. It does seem to shift a bit hard 1-2 but only at less than 20% throttle and seems to shift right into third after 2nd before 18mph still at that less than 20% throttle input. Anything 30% throttle and above she shifts fine, lock up is good too. Although it does not seem to want to shift at WOT either.
So i think a fluid change is in order. I think I'm going to start with dropping the pan and changing the ~7 quarts so that I still have some of the original fluid in there with Valvoline ATF+4 and a wix filter, adjust the bands with an instruction sheet I've found on a previous forum. I'm just worried because after I changed the fluid in my old Ram 1500 with a 46RE i changed the fluid and immediately had issues (limp mode).
I also have another concern. I recently got the Edge Insight CTS2, no tuner or anything, just the monitor. The truck is also stock besides a MBRP 4 inch and S&B CAI. I seem to run high transmission temperatures. I'm unloaded and I'm seeing as high as 192 (ambient in 70-80), and I have a very light foot. I did some research as where the CTS (PCM) is reading from and see its the governor pressure solenoid in VB. As i prefer a sensor in the cooler line OUT of trans, I've heard this is fairly accurate. It just seems to run high in general, for instance my 7 mile commute to work I saw 180. Its a little bit of backroads under 50mph but nothing I would expect to see that high a temp from. My thought is that the heat exchanger is really heating up the fluid to ECT because the other day it seemed to stay at 192 and stay there for the duration of my drive, but that is a little too hot for my liking.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
