Hey all, I did a search and didnt find what I was looking for even though I am sure this ? has been asked before. I am getting a new aftermarket converter and valve body done real soon here and wondering when I should do the 1st fluid change. Isnt it recommended to let it break in for a couple thousand miles and then change the oil again? I cant remember.

Secondly, I want to install a transmission temp gauge and know there is a couple locations to put it. What place reads most accurately and how is it installed? Can I do this after the transmission or does the transmission have to be tore apart to put this in?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Jeff

I was told to do a change after 1k miles. The best place to put the trans temp is in the line. You can get a new line from dodge with a fitting in it.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have the part # for that line and fitting? Is this an internal line or external? Would it be easiest to install it while the transmission is out of the truck or is it pretty simple to do down the road?

transmission service

J, you can buy the "95 cooler line" from Fred at Desert Diesel in Arizona, for under $100, the sensor port is already installed in the line for some reason... maybe someone knows Dodge changed the line, but anyhow you remove the old line and install the new, pretty simple, except the threading of the fittings can be a bear, and you lose about qt or two of fluid. The line is the one that runs from the left side of the transmission across in front of the pan and up into the cooler. Remember to ensure the rubber check valve and spring is removed from the one you buy, because there is already one installed in the cooler that prevents drain back, you might ask Fred if he would remove it for you, he did for me. Hope this helps, any question dont hesitate to ask.

Jeff,

Not sure if it is too llate o rnot, but as mentioned above, I would not purchase one of the Dodge transmission lines that is ready for a transmission sending unit to be plugged in.

I am on my second line and both of these lines I have had, rattle like a stuffed pig.

personally I would just go buy a stock line, put some pressure fittings on it and build your own. It would be tons quieter. I'm not sure if you rmeember that rattle on my truck or not, but boy is it annoying.

I have the line mentioned above. When ATS did the transmission they also put the line in for me along with the temp sensor. It can be done after the fact.

My first service will be at 15,000 miles or one year. That is what ATS recommends to keep warranty intact.

transmission Temp Sensor Location

I plugged a temp sensor into the 1/8 NPT port on the passenger side of the transmission case (one of three ... I used the highest mounted one) and get my readings there as well as from my DD pan.

I assume because the sensor is in the transmission casing itself and immersed in rapidly flowing fluid it will give me the highest reading as the fluid is doing the most work at that point.

Is this equivalent to sensing the input line to the cooler?

Just wondering... it does save me buying tee fittings or new lines.
