My '01. 5 CTD with 156,000 miles is having a little trouble shifting when cold. When truck is stone cold it will not shift from 3rd to 4th until you have driven 5+ miles. If after . 5 mile you take your foot off the skinny stick and then return to the previous position it will shift right up. When the truck has been off for a while and it has cooled to under 140 it will do close to the same thing but it will shift ok once you have gone 1 mile or so.

When the truck is warm, 190F, it is still slow to shift from 3rd to 4th. It just hesitates, tach will stop going up, mph stops going up, it waits about 3-4 sec and then shifts.

Ok so my questions is when I change my trans oil here in a few miles I am planing to changeing the transducer and gov pressure solenoid. Should I change anything else? Do you think this will help my problem or do I need to do something else. If anyone in the central Ohio area has a set of gauges I would like to see what the pressures are doing inside this thing. I do have a Factory Service Manual so I know what it is supposed to be.

Don't Waste Your Money On Gov Solenoid And Transducer. They Only Handle The 1-3 Shifts. The Transducer Is Poss Only If It Is Reading The Wrong Temperature. The Pcm Just Grounds A Different Solenoid When All Parameters Have Been Met. Hesitating Into 4th Once It Does Decide To Shift Could Be 3-4 Accum Spring In V/b, Worn Clutch Pack, Worn Seals, Loose Solenoid On V/b, Etc,etc. Try To Think Of More Info To Help You Diagnose.

Ok so don't change the Transducer and Pres Soilnoid? Any Ideas on what I should change? Were can I get some gauges to see what the guts are doing?

I live in Medina, about 20 miles south of Cleveland. I have a pressure gauge that you can use. I bought mine from the local parts store for $45. 00 (carquest).

You might try installing a valve body kit just to freshen things up!

Might be normal, the PCM will not allow OD(4th gear) or converter clutch to engage when fluid temp. is below 50 deg. F. bg

my 01. 5 has never wanted to shift into OD below 45 mph, which i think is another set parameter for shifting into 4th. I think when the transmission is cold, that they try and delay longer to help warm up everything, so i really dont think its a problem, just let off a little bit and go...

I got my valve body kit from transgo. i think it was $80. 00 or so. They are not hard to install. Just need a little patients and just a few tools.

So maybe this is just a normal problem? Ok I guess I can see that, only thing that stinks is my dad's '99 will shift right up when cold, kinda spoils a man. I did not know that a shift kit was that cheap :) hmmmm maybe I will have to get some gauges and check and go for a good vb rebuild. Guess I will take the Transducer and Gov Pres Sol back to DC. Oo.
