My transmission started holding in 1st a little longer than normal and then it completely hung up in 1st. I found several posts from TDR members advising to change the governor pressure solenoid and the governor pressure switch which I did. Still would not shift out of 1st gear (cost about $250 and the usual bath in transmission fluid). Then I found a post in "911" forum and a member said to replace the transmission output shaft speed sensor. Got one at AutoZone for about $16, put it in and it fixed the problem. I advise anyone with this problem to replace the sensor first as it is easy to do and a lot less expensive. Hope this helps someone since guys on here have helped me many times. LOL

Stuck in first

Absolutly, I had first & reverse only. I read these posts & replaced the sender in the Napa parking lot , 2 minutes tops. It shifted like a new transmission. I got the "expensive" Echlin sender for $21. 00. Thanks, Randy 99, 2500,2w dr

Great that it worked out that good for you Randy. Makes me feel good since TDR members have helped me so many times!

I currently have the same problem. I'm hung in 1st until I wind it up then let off the throttle. I just changed the transmission speed sensor to no avail (Auto Zone - $29. 95). I will try the gov. switch and sensor tomorrow. I have 267,000 miles on the original transmission, and this is the 1st problem.

Looks like you started with the right part first anyway. Sorry it didn't work for you but the governor pressure solenoid and switch will probably get you going. LOL

I am also getting "torque converter shudder". According to my transmission man, my TC is going south and it's most likely losing metal shavings which are clogging the governor switch. He is going to do me a "side job" in his garage. He is going to build it up medium duty with a new converter, and r&r it for only $1,500. 00. He has built 20+ for me, but never for a TCD. He is good and I trust him.

well I am having the same problem...
changed the speed sensor and no fix. .
I did notice a few small metal particles on the tip of the sensor. .
is it magnetic ? if I have metal particles does that mean my trans is going bye bye ? how long do I have ?

also what is the procedure for changing the gov pressure switch and or solenoid ?

Are the particles large, like size of a grain of salt or larger,

or is it more like fine almost powder-like metal?

I have heard that if If it's very fine that is normal wear, but large particles could mean something more serious. A transmission expert can look at the metal shavings and sometime tell what the issue is.

Also, what trouble codes you are getting? Did you try replacing the transmission relay? Again, a cheap item to replace in the troubleshooting process. I don't know about replacing the gov or solenoid, but it does involve removing the VB.

very small particles. . powder like. . I guess

where is the relay you are talking about ?
and what is it called exactly of part #

as for the gov switch and solenoid, I just involves dropping the trans pan right ? it does not require the trans to come out...

Am I correct in surmising that the a bad shaft speed sensor could mess with the speedometer reading? My truck just yesterday began displaying symptoms described above and the day before the wife received some overspeed documentation that she believes is unwarrented, if you know what I mean. :-laf Could be useful information to present to the judge...

I am adding to this old post to possibly help someone else with the same problem. First to thank the original poster because I was about to drop the pan and replace those internal items. I ran across this and tried it and my trans works like new again.

Beyond that I need to thank Ernie at Suncoast Converters. I bought my converter and valve body from them about five years ago and have had no problems until today when the truck wouldn't shift out of first gear. I called for some advice, while trying to limp my truck home from work in first gear. I was about 20 miles away and my truck has 4. 10s so I was not looking forward to that drive. Ernie told me to remove the transmission relay from the under hood panel and the truck would start out in third gear. This worked and got me home much quicker. I then came across this thread, went to Napa in town and replaced the speed sensor in my driveway and now works fine. This is at least the third time this forum has saved me lots of time and money on repairs. Thanks TDR members!

47RE stuck in 1st gear. Oil is nice and pink. Replaced Transmission Speed Sensor on driver's side of transmission. Works perfect!

Did notice metalic powder on old sensor.

Thanks TDR Folks!

My trans. will only shift out of first when I let up on the pedal. I changed the speed sensor-no change. Also the shifter will not go into Park. Help I need to go to work. Thanks Richard 2009 1ton edge controller 300k miles rebuilt trans
