Well I searched and checked the Owners Manual. . no dice. Looking for some help. .

How much ATF4 do I need for both units?

Besides the dealer, who carries this oil and for how much?

Same for trans filter. . how much & from whom? Dealer only?

Anything to look (out) for?

Thanks for the info--going to be Saturdays a. m. project.

just dropping the pan and changing the filter then filling it up? about 12. cannot remember the tranfer case. atf 4 is now at parts stores as is the filters.

According to the '03 FSM, a service fill (means dropping pan and filter only) on the transmission will take 4 quarts, and the transfer case will take 2 quarts.

Yeah - a face full of ATF when dropping the pan :)

Remove the bolts along the sides and the back that hold the pan to the transmission - and loosen the fronts up about half-way. This way, you can drop the back of the pan, and at least have some control of where the fluid spills.

You'll need a Torx screwdriver (T-20, I think - can't remember for sure) for the filter. The pan gasket is re-useable, so don't use the cork gasket that may come with your new filter (depending on where you buy it). Watch the torque on the pan bolts when putting the pan back up - the aluminum is easy to strip out (125in. lbs. is the spec).

The FSM is wrong. You need six quarts of ATF for a pan drop and refill. I just went through this w/ my 01'. For some reason it's the biggest secret out there as to how much fluid a 47RE needs.

Big 10-4 on the biggest secret out there. . I did try a search before posting.

Well. . Napa did have the oil. . with my discount it was 3. 99 per qt.

After reading 12, I got nervous and bought 16 for both-thats okay though

cause I got crazy and ordered a TCI aluminum pan from summit. . another 150$. . but it came with a filter/gasket and another screen(?)

At least it has a drain plug for an easier go'round next time.

So the 18. 99 filter kit & perhaps some oil can go back to Napa when done.

Is there a torque for the Torx filter screws?

Thanks for the info. . as y'all can surmise it didnt happen today as planned.

The wife's Explorer decided to burn up a window motor, than the wife's protoge' decided to jam (and I mean JAM) Shrek2 into my Excursions DVD player. Its Miller time--

assembly specs are very wide from the factory, 35 inch pounds is the median.

Well J You nailed it. . I got exactly 6 out from the gear & 2 from the TC.

With the new (deeper) pan, it took 7 to get the level to the "min" mark. . I will recheck when hot.

So... a review FWIW...

Less than 14k miles and the trans oil looked okay. There was a slight bit of sludge on the magnet. . no chunks or anything to fear. The yellow paper element in the filter just had a slightest tinge of gray, but even touching wouldnt produce any signs of debris. The filter screws were T25.

Coulda done the trans job for 44$. . but the pan & xtra oil qt took it to 178$.

New TCI pan looks nice, went on well. It did come with a new gasket & longer allenhead SS screws. I used antisieze, but I may replace them with steel, as SS in aluminum scares me. Summit sent the pan Sat delivery & didnt charge me for it. Nice.

The transfer case oil was really dark. Pretty much black. No sign of debris, but I am darn glad I did it now. It did take 2. 5qts to bring it to the fill plug. . on level ground.

Pulling the skid plate off sure helps, only 4 bolts & saves hassle.

So with another 12$, hopefully this all buys my TC & 47re some more time.

Thanks for the replies-hope my info helps someone else-- Drew
