just found out that the wifes truck has transmission probs.

she brought it in cause the transmission pan started to leak so the dealer put new gasket & filter , fluid. when the tech took it outside he noticed that its taking off in 2nd gear and the only time first gear works is if you manually pull it down.

my wife bought this truck last august with 36,300mi on it and now it has 39,800. this is her baby that she only drives on nice days (obviously-- lack of miles). it looks like dodge is NOT going to cover this under warranty because she is 3800mi past but who knows how long this problem has been there.

please help (if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy)

mama's truck is a 2001. 5 black sport shortbox quad 4x4.

i never noticed it but it does take off in 2nd. first gear works fine if you shift it manually, it wont shift in to first by itself??? im just too used to the 5/6 speeds.

Governor pressure sensor and solenoid should take care of the problems. I had the same problem a little while back. It's an easy fix too. Drop the pan and filter and the parts are right there. In and out in about 45 minutes. Parts were about $175-200, if I remember right.

Check the recalls

I know it was a problem with some of the 2000 and 2001 trucks. Most of 'em had the V-10 engine, but it's the same transmission, so I wouldn't think it'd be any different. I know of two people who had the transmission fixed under recall repairs. Hope it all turns out well for you.

sounds too good to be true!!

the dealer told my wife $1050. 00 to fix problem with no guarante on the rest of transmission, and told her $4240. 00 for a reman transmission. thats why mama ain't so happy. thats why it sounds too good to be true. I'd like a little more input on this before i go to the dealer.

thanks to all. Al

Going through this issue right now. I replaced the solenoids and problem is still there... ... Talked to a friend that i have at the stealer and they have had 2 in the past month where they had to put valve bodies in. I am taking mine out and and looking for issues in my valve body before i spend 700. 00 on a new one. I'll keep you informed!

Please refrain from the generic use of the word, "stealer" on the TDR website. Feel free, however, to post specific details about good - as well as bad - experiences with any dealership.

Had very similar problem at 15,000 mi. - took off 80% of time in 2nd. When it did start in 1st-would not shift out till 2700 rpm (no load). Dealer said "see this often- it's the Pressure Sensor"! Took under 2 hours for repair. If this sounds similar-I would manually shift into 1st and shop around.

If the autos behind the 24v have the throttle valve cable, check to see if bothe ends of the cable are hooked up or if the cable is good.

I had one end on mine that part of the end that is attached to the throttle linkage was broken off. As long as there is no slack in the cable it holds in place, used a little RTV silicone to help hold it. With it disconnected it usually wanted to start in second and the shifts were very mushy. Works great now.

Good luck.

I just had the same thing happen to mine about a month ago, went into limp mode and would start out in 2nd gear. I called Bill at DTT and he said it sounded like the governor pressure sensor. I went to the dealer the next day and got a new one (they had plenty of them, the parts guy said this is a commen problem @ $70). It took about 1 hour to replace it and change the filter and fill it back up with Mobil 1 synthetic fluid. It has been fine every since. You might give Bill a call to get his thoughts on it.

no big surprise

well, spoke to tech about the gov. pressure sensor and was told that he's never heard of that part fixing this paticular problem ?

will drive truck today to diagnose further.

thanks from (mama)

UPDATE

i finally drove the truck for 50mi today and heres what i found

if you start the truck and go, first gear works. (once)

if you stop and then go it dont work.

when leaving from a stop, if i slap the pedal down it will downshift to first but if i just push it to the floor it wont shift or it will shift in & out 2or 3 times real fast.

other than that it seems fine to a guy who has a 6 speed.

does this still sound like the gov. pressure sensor? hate to have the wife spend 300 for nothing?

thanx Al

Summit, first off take your truck to another dealer. The person you talked to obviously has not a clue about Mopar auto trannies. Have them hook the DRB to your truck and monitor the actual and target Gov. pressure. You did not mention if the check engine light was on. If the PCM senses more than 3 psi of gov pressure at 0 mph it will set a code. As the others have said I agree the Gov pressure solenoid and sensor (replace both) are the problem. Usually the VB is not the cause unless the trans has been smoked and alot of debris has circulated through the trans. You cannot sand the valves down and make them work freely. They are coated aluminum. When this happens a new VB is the only cure. As for $4000+ for a trans and $700 for a VB, that is totally ridiculus:--) . That must be triple retail.

talked to tech and he said that he can check the sensor with DRB.

will find out next week. will post what is found or not found.

a BIG thanks to all for the help!!!

:( My 01 has been doing the same thing for a couple of weeks, while searching for answers in my spare time (don't know what spare time is right now) I have been shifting manualy.

The last few days it seems like it takes a little longer to get rolling but once TC locks in in third gear it seems ok.

If 1st and second were slipping would they go out slowly or all at once?

Could there be some trash in the transmission causing some of this problem?

I've been thinking I need a transmission change with some enhancements. That opens up all kinds of questions and price ranges from 1600 to 5G for everything from a repair to a BD transmission with a TC and Valve Body.

Well I took out the valve body and and checked out 1-2 shift valves and they looked fine. Put back together and hoped for a hoped that worked..... nope. I took it back to the guy that i know at the stealership and now he could narrow it down the the govenor solenoid and sensor. Keeping in mind that i have already replaced these items from the begining. He set me up with a new set and I just finished replacing them. It now shifts perfect. Tell me how they sell me a set that does not work properly? and i think that if i did not know the guy there, they were going to give me a hard time about me bringing the parts back... . so there you have it! Your answer is the govenor solenoid and sensor. I have $128. 00 in parts, gallons of fluid and 3 hours of my life that i will never get back! Good luck and let me know what happens!

C4gan;

I replaced my oil pressure sending unit and it went bad in about 3 weeks. The dealership replaced it and filed the paperwork with DC. It really helps to keep your invoices.

Summit;

Does sound to be a governor sensor & solenoid. Much cheaper than the drum lip seal.
