Fleetwood GearBox S2 310FS

hey guys, got a question on 47re trans. this coming June we will be taking a trip to the middow east coast, SC,NC,VIRG,KENTUCKY and back south again. I never did pull a camper in mountains before, I just installed an aux. trans cooler for temp problems that we have down south la. I was told that trans will run hotter when trans is not in O/D. does anyone knows if t/c only locks up only in O/D are it locks in either gears also. thank for any information you may have.

When mine was stock the transmission would heat up on a hill if I could not go fast enough to keep it locked up in overdrive, usually falling below about 42mph.

If I pulled the lever into third and stayed above 25 mph the transmission would cool off to normal.

Now with the DTT 89% torque converter it don't normally heat up unlocked in overdrive.

We were all over the country with a previous truck with the 47RE, no problems. The TC locks in both third (D) and fourth (OD). You should be easily able to tell if it's locked by watching your tach.

If you do find yourself running in first or second, remember higher revs mean less TC slippage and better cooling, so if you have to creep up a mountain grade, keep the revs up.

We crawled up a lot of steep grades to find the most remote camping spots in the mountains and never had a problem with the 47RE.

If you pull or hall a heavy load you need temp gauge

It a must to have a transmission temp gauge installed proper so you get a correct reading. I just got my gauge the other day and am installing it Thursday. I got the oil line with the port from Massdiesel. Scott fixed me uo with the setup.

... and then one of these days, you can get an aftermarket VB (or fully updated transmission). That way you are able to lock up in 2nd - with a mystery switch. Locked 2nd is SCHWEEEET when dealing with switchbacks (both uphill and down) like the Smoky Mountain Nat'l Park between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC.
