47re trans

Back in December my Transmission went away in my new Dodge 2500 4X4. Well they replaced the trans with another 47re as far as I can tell. After about 900 miles the transmission started acting up again.

When it is cold I am having a problem with the shifting. I start the truck and by the time I get to the highway I have run about a mile and a half at 30 miles an hour . At that point I get on a major highway that requires me to be running over 60 miles an hour to blend in with traffic. As I accelerate (not floored but about 3/4 throttle the trans shift from 1st to 2nd smoothly but when it goes to shift into third it revs ( or slips ) and I have to back off the throttle to get it to shift. Then once I get on the highway it will hold 4th gear and the overdrive will not kick in until you let off the throttle. I am afraid that one day someone is going to run over me. When the transmission is fully warmed up it seems to run fine. I am going to bring it back to the shop this weekend. Was wondering since a lot of you live further north than I do have you run into any transmissions acting up as mine has?

No problems here with my '03 47RE, and it's been awful cold up here this winter. Below zero for the last few nights consecutively, and hasn't been above freezing for weeks.

Low transmission fluid level has been an issue with the 47RE, even when the dipstick says it's full. Fluid level is checked with the transmission HOT, and in Neutral. You might add a pint of ATF and see what happens. If your dealership guys aren't too bright, it's possible that they have shorted you on transmission fluid.

I second Tommy on that, had a similar problem with my '98 which was low on refill after it dumped about half it's fluid due to a loose cooling line at 300 miles on the clock. Added a pint, no problem.



Also, the transmission does have some kind of a hold-low command for cold, our '01 would hold off on a 3-4 shift until it had gone about a half a mile when it was below 35 degrees, but nothing like what you are experiencing.....

Thanks for Everyone's input. At least I will have some Idea what is wrong. So I can give these so called Techs somewhere to start.

On the '03 it will shift into 4th, but it won't lock the torque converter until the temp in the transmission is up to some point. I don't know what that point is off the top of my head. Usually mine's ready to lock up within a mile or so from my house.

Just remember you do have the 7yr/70,000 mile coverage. And the other big two manufatures do not have!!!
