HI,

I am getting ready to service my 47RE transmission for the first time and am looking for recommendations on what transmission fluid to use.

Thanks,

Derek B.

Do a search and you'll get enough posts to read until you're ready to keel over. I a nut shell I think yours calls for ATF+4 to stay by the book. A lot of folks run the Amsoil and I think some are running some sort of Valvoline.

Like I said, TONS of posts on trans oil.

My '02 was spec'd ATF+4. Since the transmission mods, I run ATF+3 Valvoline.

I am very pleased with my setup, but you may want to run the +4 stuff if there is any issue of warranty. Many folks will say it doesn't matter, but if I expect the dealer to repair/ replace any of the components, I think it's only fair to run what is specified.

I would run what the manufacture recommendations are. I have a 2000 and run ATF+3 and have no problems for 126K miles. ( I hope I don't jinx myself :) ) I don't abuse the transmission but I don't baby it either. I use the extra power I have all of the time. I tow very rarely so this is just experience running empty.

I use Amsoil but that is my choice, If you tow a lot I would use a synthetic ATF, It will lower your tran. temp. much more over non syn.

VALVOLINE MAX LIFE

After a bit of research I went with Valvoline Max Life ATF. So far, it seems to work fine with no noticeable difference in trans performance.

I just flushed out my Amsoil (saved it) and am giving the valvoline a try. so far I like it.

I have a transgo kit installed with firm shifts. With the amsoil, the shifts were snap fingers quick, but smooth. with the valvoline, they are quick and firm with a little kick, depending upon throttle position.

The Amsoil may be the better fluid. I'm a little concerned about it's wear charecteristics though. DTT seems to have documented some extra wear, which does not suprise me as this is a very slippery fluid, which probably produces more friction (two surfaces slipping past each other).

Will see which is best after a couple of weeks.

So far the amsoil is the better behaved in a heavy truck. In My 74 cuda, the valvoline would have been better. lighter car, firm shifts enjoyed, but in a 3 ton truck, that firmess might be a little harder on parts. (u-joints etc... )

absolutely no locking convertor clutch shudder. very well behaved.

I just replaced the trans to cooler tube with the port for temp guage, lost about 1qt of fluid , checked all the local pts stores for +4 ATF many had never heard of it , I finally went to napa no +4 there either however the clerk brought out the spec book from valvoline and in plane englesa type 3 and 4 are compatable. I still dont want to mix so i guess its to the hi priced guys for a quart until i do a total change.

it is only available at Chrysler dealerships. Chrysler will not publish spec, and are in clear violation of the law.

Valvoline does stand behind their product. They claim.
