What are the main differences in these two trannies? With the basic upgrades like convertor and valve body, will the 48 hold more power? And is the flexplate a weak link in the 48?

If you do a serch on the 48re... you will find many posts on this. The main differences are the planetaries, slightly thicker sun gear, the pump is also different. There are diffeernces in the VB too. Like everything else, a vb and converter is a band aid and depending on how the the tech building the transmission felt the day it was built before it was installed at the factory, you will see varing results. Hence why some trannies last 100k and some 5k and I know this from personal experiences. This is the reason many transmission builders like to do the whole transmission and the upgrades required to hold more power. As for as the flex plate, they are different now and these new trucks make 500 hp with little work. Again... . some hold and some don't so I air on the side of caution. Serch in the 3rd gen forums under engine and transmission and serch the pot from 2003 where a lot this is discussed.

Yea, I know what you mean. I haven't owned an automatic truck in a while, but my wife is wanting another one. i personally don't think they will ever build an auto to stand up to pulling heavy loads every day. I've had from stock to $7000 units and I never feel safe working one hard, no matter how many ugrades are done. The 6 speed is my pick, but the wife has to have an auto. I've tortured some 6 speeds and never had any trouble. Just trying to decide what model to get her. I know where a few 2003 the 47s in them are for sale, but i think I want the 48 and ho motor. The truck will only have maybe a tst/ez and a turbo. it will be built for towing instead of the track. I really like my setup on my 05 6 speed. It pulls like a beast. I actually got in a little race the other day with a buddy of mine. He was in a new Chevy HHR and I was pulling about 15k. I saw him try to pass me and when he got to my tailget I floored it and pulled about a truck length on him, then my clutch gave out and he passed me. But he had to go through some heavy smoke there for a minute :-laf . But it really surprised me that I was actually out running him with that load. If i can get the auto to pull that good and stay together, i'll be happy.

Look. . I know what you mean about the auto, trust me that before I met the TDR I also dropped 4K on an art carr transmission that they said would hold... ... I need not say more. Now before I go any further I have had my 47 that was in my 97 that ran 12. 5 @ 106 with a built trans and I am currenty building the one on my 05. Like everyone else you have to do reaserch on what you want. I'm in miami fl so if you ever need a ride let me know... LOL.

Same here. If any of you guys need help around north Ga, look me up. So which transmission do you guys recommend if you had the choice to build one? i don't think I really need the billet shafts. I want to say this truck will never see the track, but I know that isn't true. Maybe I'll take it easy on the launches. Well the more I sit here and think of all the broke shafts I've replaced, maybe I do need the billets :-laf .

I am a builder and installer for DTT; It is what I run and recommend. As for your question of Billet components. If you are going over 500 HP then you need the input shaft. If it is 4x4 and your going to be launching with it, then the output shaft shoud also be done. The flex plate I would also upgrade for piece of mind since they seem to fail more often than in the older trucks.

Well, I'm gonna buy another truck and I'm trying to decide if I want to spend more money to get a truck with the 48RE or just go with the 47RE in the 2003 trucks. Either way, I'm gonna bomb it. i would judt like to know which one is stronger once built. I'm sure the 48 is better, but I'd like to know why. More than likely I will be putting a full bult transmission and triple disc convertor. Not sure what company yet, probably DTT.

I believe the 48re has an extra friction and steel in the 3rd gear clutch (not sure), and higher line pressures than the 47re. If you have the choice I would go with the 48re over the 47re. I say on trannies get the hardest core transmission, realative to your useage (race trannies aren't necessarily towing trannies), you can afford, and make sure the installer is someone you can trust.

DTT has single and tripple disk converters available. As for 47 or 48... . get what is available to you. They are both good trannies and that can both be modded since both transmissions have parts that interchange.

If you are going to BOMB it with more than 50-60 HP it's your choice. You WILL have to build either one to handle the power. If you build a 47RE you can easily swap in the 48 parts and have essentially the same thing.

The 48RE changes simply took the 47RE fixes about half way to where they needed to be for a solid unit. It got done what was needed for the higher HP trucks but fell short of a really good unit. TM was the answer to the rest.
