I recently installed a rebuilt Jasper 47RE transmission and torque converter in my 1998 12 valve 4x4 truck that I bought(transmission & converter) from a friend that rolled his truck. A month has gone by and last night while in overdrive, I got this really loud whine. I was going up a somewhat steep hill when it started. When I crest the hill the noise quit after about a mile distance at 50 MPH. Now I'm leary of this transmission. I wish now I had lots of money or a stick shift.

Doing searches on here on TDR makes me think of the overdrive unit but it could be my torque converter couldn't it be?

I still have my original auto transmission and may want to try to get a rebuild kit from Piers or somebody and rebuild it myself as I don't have the income anymore(retired) to get it done. Anybody with ideas on how to tell what the whine is or advise on where to get great parts. I wished I had put it in drive to see if the noise quit but I had my wife and two grandkids with me in a sudden rainstorm in freezing temps after dark and worried we may be stuck where we didn't want to be. Thanks to all. HerbW(a longtime TDR Brother!)

I'd pull the dipstick and check out the fluid. Does it feel slippery? Is it burnt or smell burnt? I don't have any good experiences with automatics behind diesels.

Jasper transmission equals problem looking for a place to happen. Have heard little good about them.

Since the whine went away and you don't seem to notice anything else unusual its hard telling. It coul be something simple, it could be something serious. Possibility it broke the OD clutch retainer snap ring and spit part of it out.

Might noit hurt to drop the pan and check for anything unusual.

Today I drove it around and all seems normal but the fluid was low. It's 28 degrees out with winds up to 41 MPH today measured on my weather station. I never could get it very warm and that might make the fluid read lower than usual. It measured bearly on the tip of the stick and smell and looked fine. It's all Chrysler ATF-4 Synthetic filled about 400 miles ago. I added some but will wait till it gets warmer. The temp guage never leaves cold temps reading. I still appreciate anybody's advise. Herb

Fluid level would have been my guess. I bet something got dry going up the hill and either got warm or just complained. These trannys like to run a little over full.
