My friend has a 03 2500 with the SO cummins and 410 gears.

The transmission (47re) seems to shift into overdrive to fast. To the point where the truck almost feels like its lugging. (no loads, normal driving). Whats up with it?

thanks Peter

It's normal !!! Tell him to run with over drive off till he hits 50mph.

There is a black box out there to change shift points but i am told it is a bit pricey!!! around $600. .

I got spoiled by the program in my '01. 5. It wouldn't shift to O/D until I let off the peddle or hit 65mph. The lowest it would shift to O/D was 38mph if I let off. I liked it that way. I could decide when it shifted to O/D without playing with the O/D button. I know it sounds like a lot of work to push the button but I liked to be able to simply let off the throttle when I wanted it to shift to O/D. Apperantly, alot of owners complained that it wouldn't shift to O/D under light to moderate throttle so the "fixed" it. I would "pay" to have the old program back.

The 48RE is the same way. The '03 47 or 48 would shift to O/D too soon under light to moderate throttle but wouldn't shift to O/D soon enough under heavy throttle. DC fixed the second part of the problem but the first part stays the same.

That is a bit pricey. These aftermarket companies from filters and oil to transmissions and electronics are really raking us over the coals. We complain about the cost of filters at the dealership but pay the aftermarket companies outrageous amounts of money to void our warranties. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Dang, I hope you had the 3. 54's. Mine 01. 5 had 4. 10's and at 65 it was begging to go into OD. If I pulled off from a stop and gave it a constant 2/3 throttle it would go through the gears and hold 3rd till about 55 then kick into OD.

check the tsb list.

i had the same problem. i think there is a tsb which alters the shift points. alternatively, check and adjust the kickdown cable accordingly. one last thing - if possible put a shift kit in the valve body.

best of luck.

47RE

All GOOD new design diesels have low end torque,More RPM may produce some more HP,But that does not mean that you are in the engines power band. Cat motors are very well known for their low end torque,Some of their engines peak torque is 1400/1800 RPM"S. They really pull nice. I like the way my 5. 9 drops and pulls out.

Steve: did you have that second part fix from DC (heavy throttle) or do you still control it by letting out of it.

The new program takes getting used to. If I accelerate normally, it'll drop into O/D and lock up too soon for my liking. If I get into the throttle, it hangs up in 3rd until I let off like the '01. 5 did. I guess that could be the best of both ways but it it takes some learning to get it to do what I want it to do with my right foot and not fiddling with the O/D button. I haven't had the reflash done that's supposed to fix the hanging in 3rd characteristic. Not sure I want to. It's kinda handy. The main thing about this program is, you need to put your foot into the throttle to make it work right in my opinion.

It's not that big of problem for me either to control it with the (foot program) my on program that I refer to as myself, but still a learning process (especially if the BLUES, or out and about). The only real concern I have is after cold engine start, and leave from the work place. I usually leave parking lot, and travel maybe a quarter of a mile an make a right turn to pull a small hill. The oil pressure is still pretty high (not stabilize) if in third gear (OD) off its taching about 1900 RPMS pulling the hill if I leave it in OD it falls on it's face at the break of the hill shifting into fourth (left hand turn at top of hill) if I have to break to keep from running into someones rearend, and RPM drops to about 1300 RPM. I guess my question is, is there a certain RPM not to exceed while oil pressure is not stabilized. Can higher oil pressure be harmful to the engine if you have to throttle hard sometimes to pull hills, etc. I usually idle (winter) long enough for the grid heaters to finish there cycle or warmer weather showing oil pressure.
