First I would like to go ahead and admit my lack of knowledge concerning automatic transmissions. Yesterday when driving my 94 47RH automatic truck It first seemed to make a sort of grinding noise only occasionally while I was slowing down. Then when I pulled into the parking lot where I was going to park and went to shift into reverse it only growled like it wasn't falling into gear. So I loade it up and hauled it back to our shop. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be causing this. This is the first time I have had any trouble with it. Also when I shut the truck off and then restart it while in park I can go down into reverse without any problem, but if I go to drive and then try to go back to reverse the truck once again begins to grind. Occasionally know also when I shift to park it does not seem like it falls into park as it will still roll. I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it so any help would be appreciated. I don't understand why it works sometimes and not the rest of the time. Thanks.

The first thing to do is adjust the shift linkage so that it is in the gear that is indicated. Move the lever so that you feel that it is in the notch. Then look at the indicator to see if it agrees. If it does not you can adjust the indicator. There is a little lever on the passenger side of the steering column. It pulls a cable that is attached to the indicator. Make sure that the cable is on the lever correctly. If it is and the trans is behaving correctly according to the notch that you feel, bend the little lever until the indicator agrees with the notch.

If the indicator and the notch agree and the trans is still not behaving correctly, then you want to do some pressure checks. If you don't have a service manual let me know and I'll get the pressure test stuff from mine.

i think that the snap ring that holds the o/d directs has broken. This will break in pieces and fall into the parking paw area. If this is the problem, it will grind occasionally and won't let it go into park occasionally. Chances are, there will be inch long pieces in the pan. If the snap ring goes all the way out you could lose all forward gears (1-3) and cause a mess. Need to get it into a shop and get in freshened up.

Is it a 4X4? Could it be the snap ring in the transfer case? They are prone to break but don't know about the NO PARK??
