I've found several kits out there to rebuild the 47RH. However none address the OD. I Know the OD unit is internal but, is it rebuildable? Is it just more gears and disc? Or does the whole unit need to be replaced. I've never rebuilt a transmission and I'm going to get the manual eventually to do this. Right now I'm just gathering Intel to cover all the bases. I'm even considering a swap out transmission from BD but I'm trying to go lowest coast right Know.

94 CTD 4x2 has moderate power enhancements along with BD(TC, Valve body, Pressurelock, Torq lock) Amsoil/Lube guard, Temp monitoring.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the S. Puget Sound area, so any one with the special rebuild tools for transmission work maybe we can do a tool swap like my pump timing tools Etc Etc Etc.

:)

I believe the OD unit is external. It's right on the back. and yes you can rebuild it, some folks even with doing an upgrade either do the front half or the hole thing. Lets say a guy has an 01' or 02 and just wants a better converter, you could make the V/B changes checkout the front half and do the updates then install a better converter..... it's their $ choice.

all the kits i have bought give overdrive clutches. U have the overdrive clutches and the overdrive directs. I see your transmission is a 94, 47 rh. PLEASE heed this information! u need to do this! U need to buy the following parts: thinner steels so u can get ten OD direct cluthes instead of 9. I believe the thickness ios . 053 or . 054. The u need to get the 15 degree sun gear instead of the 23 degree. The 15 degree is stronger. Also u have to buy the 15 degree rear planetary. It has cuts for lubricaton. And in turn u need the annelius gear that goes aroung the rear planet. Oh, also ask for the rear planet be a 5 pinion planet. U NEED TO DO THIS! these parts are in 97 RE trannies, 96 and above. Buy a good converter and VB. Good Luck,

OD spring

As you approach this keep in mind that there is a spring in the OD section that is under some 800 lbs. of tension which must be compressed to remove retaining ring and then released under control! If this spring gets away from you it could get ugly. Just a heads up for caution.

For a mild truck, I wouldn't be too concerned with updating all the parts in the OD section.

Here's why.

The overdrive direct clutches rarely ever fail because there is a one way clutch preventing them from slipping. Increasing them from 9 to 10 doesn't strengthen overdrive because that clutch is disengaged in overdrive.

Just be sure you shim it properly according to the manual (shimming dictates shift overlap and thus longevity) and it will live as long as you have enough line pressure for your specific torque level.

And like the others have said, be careful with that spring.

Good luck,

Chris

My original trans puked a clutch assemblies (I forget which one but it wasn't the OD). You need to update some things as mentioned above. I replaced mine with a new one from Dodge because the dealer it got towed to "doesn't waste time repairing those diesel trannys". Change is good!!!

I found a great source for parts. Google PATC. They have upgrade kits for bringing older trannys up to 48 RE specs.
And a great place for the special tools is E Tool Cart . com

I just rebuilt my 48 RE and haven't got it back in yet. It should be up and running in another day or two.

How was your experience with patc? Did you recieve all of the correct parts? What all did you do, just a standard rebuild or more?

I did the level 5 Ramzilla kit w/o the valve body reprograming kit and torque converter both of which I got from ATS. I also deleted the pan as I've got a Mag Hy Tec.

The only problem I had with PATC was they said all parts were in stock which they weren't. If you order from them allow two weeks to get all the parts. I ended up getting more parts than I thought I would get. I got two sets of O/D direct clutches (one was the 23 single sided Raybestos clutches and the other was the Alto Red Eagle 10 double sided clutches with Kolene steels) and a new front pinion carrier gearset.
