No matter how hard I try I can't seen to fill an Automatic correctly. I was at the hole in the stick and had less than 1/2 quart left so I put in in. However when I drive it HOT (ie uncormfortable to touch the stick) its now 1/2 inch over the high side of the cross-hatch area. I guess i'm 1/4 to 1/2 quart over.

As long as I don't see it foaming I guess its OK?

PS. I put 7 quarts in which is about what I took out. High from the factory?

I also installed a Mag-Hitech pan.

I usually crank it up, shift back and forth from drive to reverse a couple of times and put it in neutral to check it. I always find mine checks a bit high at high temps after a drive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the requirement to check the stock 48RE while idling in neutral is because it doesn't pump fluid while in park. On the other hand isn't it true that modified trannies usually are set up to pump fluid while idling in park?

The 48RE doesn't pump in Park, but it seems like most all other automatics do. The Dodge transmission is the first I've encountered that you have to check fluid level in Neutral.

I guess its just a matter of time before someone has the truck roll over them then they will have to change it (or make the horn honk).

Quick #2. Thanks for the input on level. Darn hard to read that stick too. The fluid is almost clear and it maks a 1/4 turn right after the crosshatch.

The fluid needs to be checked truck level, hot idle in neutral. If its not hot it will show low due to heat expansion.

Don't worry about the minute changes in level. You can run 2 quarts or so over full and generally not have issues, I run just short of 2 over all the time. Hot that puts the level almost or into the bends of the stick. As long as you don't get foaming and see fluid on the ground its good.

OK, thanks. That makes me feel much better.
