I can't get to work until I figure this out. I have a 2005 ram2500 4x4 with the automatic 48Re. Just after getting the truck washed the transmission started acting strange. When I come to a stop it does not shift out of gear and wants to push. Once moving it shifts up and down normally, it behaves this way in revers as well. I have already replaced the trans fluid, filter, #4617210 solenoid, and 56028196-AD transducer. I have also gone through and cleaned as many electrical connections as I could get to. Any help with this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious if you had it washed..... Check to see if they put it in 4x4 causing you to drive on the street with all 4 wheels locked? What's the idle RPM?

Sounds like the torque converter may not be unlocking.

Hoefler,

This is WAY off the subject but I noticed your signature on the left side of your post. I have an old Navy friend who lives in Shell Knob in one of the neighborhoods next to the lake at the end of a long winding road to the lake. I've visited many times.

The only way it is 30 miles from Shell Knob to Branson is by boat. I'd guess it is twice that distance by road!

When shifting from either drive or revers into park or neutral the rpms rev very briefly then settle down and idle normally. The truck idles in park or neutral at a steady 7500 rpm. When I hold the brake to keep it from moving and shift into any forward gear or revers the revs drop to about 7000 then climb to 7500 and stay there. Two more things I should mention, when I pulled the pan the fluid was dark but there wasn't any abnormal debris. And when I say it is not pulling any codes this is using the console not a scanner. Thank you again for any help as I am rely starting to worry.

Ok I went out and check the 4x4 lever ( I have the floor shift ) and the truck is not in four wheel drive, but what I find strange is that with the transfer case in neutral, 2H, or 4H it behaves just as I described above. In 4L the behavior is the same it just pulls harder. Im rely not liking this guys, but all the help is much appreciated.

What you're describing all sounds pretty normal. It's normal for ATF+4 to get dark and smell like crap after some use. RPMs dropping slightly or rising slightly (when selecting different gears) and settling at 750 RPM is text book perfect. Automatics don't come out of gear when stopping only when you select N or P.

Like Hoefler said it sounds like the converter might be staying locked.

What kind of mods if any do you have on the truck, where in So. Cal. do you live?

Describe any noises, sounds or feelings when the problem occurs.

rely no mods to the truck. Toyo open country AT 285/75/r17, Eclipse AVN 6600 head unit, Prodigy brake controller, and viper 5900 with remote start. all of these things have been the same sense 2005. No real abnormal noises, the truck just sounds like it is under load. I know neutral is not the correct way to describe the problem but it feels that way. It is like driving a manual and not having the clutch pushed in all the way. Thanks for your reply. I just joined last night so I am trying to get my sig set up so all of this will be in there. Thanks again! Almost forgot, I live near temecula california

Its not the torque converter. If it was staying locked he would get a terrible shutter when slowing down and then the engine would just bog down and die alltogether.

How hard is the truck "pushing"?

I can hold it with my foot on the brake. if the parking brake is set it wont push past it. I talked to DTT, and a good local shop (Freedom Diesel) and they both think without looking at it its electrical. I am afraid the car wash might just be a coincidence.

I'm wondering if it's a braking problem.

Maybe your car wash guys sprayed Armor All or some other crap on your rotors.
I don't think that is it because the truck should kick out of gear once it comes to a stop (don't know a better war to say it). The brakes work just as always, I have no problem stopping. Thanks to all for the continued help.

Just got of the phone with the transmission shop and they are 90% sure its the stator? in the converter. Recommended a new converter and a valve body if I wanted to upgrade it anyway. My only concern is I just don't know enough to to be sure this is the right fix.

I am new here and I know this is the 911 post, should it be removed or do we leave the tread until the problem is resolved? BTW there is no rock solid answer on my problem yet so any input is still greatly appreciated, and thanks to all who have contributed!
