48RE oil leak

This may seem kind of a petty concern but today I noticed a couple of small oil spots on my garage floor. I looked for the leak and found that oil was seeping past the adjuster on the drivers side of the case. I think it's the front band adjuster. Is there supposed to be some sealant used to prevent this? As I say, it's kind of petty. I doubt a teaspoon full has leaked out. It just irritates that my clean floor gets oil spotted by a new truck. I never saw a leak there on my '98 47RE.

Sounds like the 40-torx force screw / lock nut that adjusts the front bands, located right behind and a little ahead of the gear selector.



Is the hot line leaving the transmission leaking and maybe pooling right by the adjustment screw?

I found it on Section 21, pages 1300 and 1344 in my manual. It's called either front or kickdown band adjustment screw.



"The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is

located on the left side of the transmission case

above the manual valve and throttle valve levers. "



It is on the exterior of the transmission, above the cooling lines. I wiped everything down well and it's definitely coming past the adjuster screw. After I bought the new truck and moved the '98 aside, I scrubbed the garage floor and wanted to keep it neat and clean.

Yeh, I figured I'd have 'em look at it when I take it in for service. I still prefer the local Chrysler dealer over the Dodge one.

Follow Up

I forgot about this when I had the truck serviced. In any event, the leak seems to have "healed itself". I can't find evidence of it leaking any more now that I have a few more miles on it.

This has been a bit of a problem since this basic trans was introduced as a 727 back in '62. The bolt referred to is the front or intermediate band adjustment bolt. What happens is fluid wicks up the threads and seeps past the locknut. I always clean the area when adjusting band, apply a light ring of thread sealant to the case side of the nut, install and tighten while holding the adjuster bolt in position. As mentioned it is no big deal, however when I do an adjustment or during a rebuild or upgrade this is something I have addressed for years. Sometimes an overfill will make it worse, while a low fluid condition may hide it. Just as a reminder, always check your trans in neutral with the parking brake applied, and look at both sides of stick and go by lowest reading side.
