I have a 03. 5 HO 3500 Dually, Bully Dog Exhaust and Triple Dog programmer with 104000 mile and have a part time second gear. It has had fluid and filter changed every 40000 along with bands set. Anyone else had this problem? I do tow a 40' gooseneck but only in tow mode. The dealer says the 2nd gear band is bad and needs to be replaced. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Describe the "part time 2nd gear" a little better.

Any consistent times it does it? Loaded, empty, etc?

Does manual 2nd work and not auto or ???

Part time 2nd gear, it seems to be if it has to pull the weight of the truck up a grade or on moderate acceleration it will not hold. If I pull it into 2nd on the column it doesn't matter. If it catches in 2nd then it will hold accelerating or pulling the truck even if it drops on it's own or I pull it into 2nd. Also doesn't matter if it is locked out of or in O. D.

No the dealer did not drop the pan. All that was done was to check line pressure and check for codes but there were no codes. Just told me the front band was burned and needed to be replaced. Also if I tried to adjust it I would probably break it and then I'm in big trouble. Looking like it's time for a new trans with a few updates. I'm leaning towards ATS Stage 2.

Maybe, maybe not. If they didn't drop the pan they don't know for sure and its all a guess. Could be a simple adjustment will solve the problem.

Don't let that get in the way of upgrading though. :D

That's what I was thinking. I got 104000 out of the original so an upgrade will be good. Thanks for the input and will let you know how the new trans works when pulling.

Me too!

We're having the same issue. Truck does not want to hold 2nd gear. It will hit 2nd and downshift if I give it just a little too much pedal. I have to really ease into it to hold 2nd. If I can get to the next shift point it will hold 3rd on up. Pulling my fifth wheel it's a little trickier to get to 3rd. I had the dealer in Cody, WY check it out but no codes, pressures seemed within spec. Our next stop is Hill City, SD if we can make it through the Rockies.

Whose good in that area to have the transmission looked at?
