Cold Engine Damage?

The torque converter has been slipping and chattering for a while now but I could work around that. I have been planning on replacing the converter and trans with ATS parts. Now a new problem has come up that may require me to get the ATS stuff now. When I start the engine and wait for oil pressure to build up and put the trans in reverse it acts normal. When I put the trans in drive the engine stalls. It feels like the torque converter is trying to lock up when I put it in drive. This happens about 50 percent of the time. If I can get the trans to go into drive and not stall the engine, it is fine until the next time I start up. It seems to only do this the first the first time I put the trans in drive after a start-up. After it goes into gear once without stalling it is OK until the next start-up. Could it be the converter and why would it happen? There are no codes set.

Since the '04s (and later) have the transmission shift/lockup controls as a part of the ECM, you might want to try pulling your TST box.

If that has no effect, take it into a dealer.
