Greetings TDR,

While changing the trans fluid on 05' 2500 4x4 100k with the intent of installing trans temp sender in the pan and adjusting the bands, I noticed a crack on what I am assuming to be the reverse/1st band? I took pics with a friends Iphone so I apologize for the quality, but I was trying to dodge any ATF from dripping on her phone. It is located towards the back of the pan and connected to something that opens a valve of somesort (I am an auto trans newbie). There is significant side to side play between the two cracked pieces.

Upon discovery I did not install my temp sender in the pan, or adjust the bands. The trans was rebuilt by dealer at around 47k miles on extended warranty (truck was stock) was better for 1 day then back to the same similar problem as before. Took it back to the dealer several times, but tech was never able to confirm customer complaint. I had just assumed that this is how the automatics are in these trucks, as this is my first diesel/automatic.

I have done searches, but it's hard to search when I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I did not overtorque the bands in 72ft lbs as opposed to inch pounds. The magnet had a nice full layer of fine material in the pan.

Is this the reverse/1st band that is broken?

Can it be replaced by pulling the valve body?

Should I get an upgraded valve body now and replace at time of repair? I had been debating an electric OD lockout compared to a valve body as I need od lockout but didn't want to lose Tow/Haul. I have been saving for a new trans for awhile now but still dont think I have enough for the one I want.

The truck is used occasionally for towing, and more often for hauling , but spends a majority of it's time with a light or no load. It is my daily driver, and only form of transportation short of a bicycle.

Any help is much appreciated, thankyou.

That is the low\reverse band apply lever. The servo is what applies it by shoving a pin up under pressure.

In order to replace it you have to completely disassemble the trans, if it is broke. That might be a spacer to limit the side play, not sure.

I am dropping my VB this weekend and will look at that lever to see if it a spacer or broke.

The trans does NOT need to come out or to be disassembled to change it.

loosen the OD section and slide it back a little, turn it and the pin will come out.

It takes some finess to do it.

Putting it back together does too and then you have be careful with the OD gasket or it will leak.

There is no reason for the lever to be broken at that point as the pressure from the servo pushes against the long end of the lever and the adjustable bolt presses against the strut to the band, the pressure is in opposit direction of what looks like a crack. Are you sure that is not a casting mark. Before I would try to replace the part I would clean the "crack" with some spray clean and dye check it unless you can visually verify that it is in fact a crack. bg

BG I'm pretty sure the crack separates the two pieces and I could move them apart several mm with my fingers. So do you think even with these separated there should be no detrimental affect to the operation of the transmission?

Thankyou for all of the help so far.

I think BG is right. Wait until you have to do other transmission work, then worry about it. Keep in mind also that in normal driving, the servo is activated only in reverse.

The band is applied in reverse and manual 1st. Reverse is the potentital problem if there is too much deflection in the lever. The rear servo has a habit of cocking and jamming in the bore anyway, any more than normal deflection is going to a potential failure spot.

Droppig my VB either later today or tomorrow and will check mine to see if it is a spacer or really broke.

Edit: work on my trans and its the same way. The piece in question appears to be a spacer to minimize the defletion that direction.
