anyone rebuild their own transmissions ? i am going to attempt to rebuild a 48re trans, any tips on shift kits, valve body tips, the truck only has a 400 rwhp engine so i dont think billet shafts will be needed, it wont be raced and most likely will have very little towing besides some snowmobiles and dirtbikes. :)

I think the transmission companies should put out a DIY kit, full instructions and parts kit for those inclined to give it a go.

They could post up a qualifying list for things like tools needed and basic knowledge so those thinking of doing it could qualify themselves before buying the kit.

i am a heavy eqipment mechanic so i should be able to figure it out, i have a service manual and a 48re trans rebuild manual to follow, if nothing else i will fix it so good it will never work again lol

JWadford, I have (Did) rebuilds for years,I cannot express all blood ,sweat and skin left on vehicles I had to remove the trans B/C we had no transmission dyno, it is just not worth it. Now with the knowledge I have gained from Dave Goerend, I just remove the trans Shipped or delivery Myself Dave and I disgust what type of configuration and install. The manual does not have any type of tweaks and **** at best. LoL:{

I have been doing my own transmissions. I did the Dunrite thing and bought a VB/TC, all billet shafts, and a flex plate from them. I then went to Trans Star and purchased all of my clutches, bands, HD band strut, blue assembly lube, ATSG manual, and a seal kit(if under 100k you should not need bushings). Next stop was the junk yard for a mint 4x4 48RE.

I put all this stuff in my case and have so far had a great trans besides recently breaking my input shaft:{

You will need a way to compress the OD clutch pack, 0-300psi gauge with about 8 feet of hose and 1/8npt male for trans end, a parts washer, dial/digital indicator with base, calipers, a seal pick is handy, a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in bottom, snap ring pliers, torx bits, inch pound torque wrench (can get away without it), you will also want a assortment of snap rings for your clutch packs to set clutch clearance.

In all honesty I would just pay the extra money to have a reputable shop do it. I am so hard on my stuff I cant afford to have someone else work on it;)

Hope this helps.

i am doing the work with a friend, a recent job loss and then regain at half the pay has put him out of a performance trans so we are going to get him by.

I did a Ford A4LD 4-speed auto several years ago. Piece of cake. I wouldn't hesitate to do another automatic if the need came up.

Back then, I went to Napa and bought the TechTran manual. Step by step procedure, including testing.

The rebuild worked perfectly. All new clutches, new bands, new solenoids, new seals, etc.
