How much power will a stock 48re take before it gets unreliable???? I plan on using a smarty inconjunction with a 5" straight exhaust AFE intake ATS manifold and inlet elbow, boost fooler , and a better turbo and Injectors

I won't be towing with it in the High horsepower modes at the most 3 or 4 on the smarty while towing about 13,000 pounds . do I need to budget in major trnny upgrades as well?????

You'll have to factor in atleast a torque converter and shift kit. . This will get you in the mid 13's if you launch easy with around 2. 0 or slower 60' times. . If you want better than mid 13's, plan on going all out with the trans including billet shafts. . This has been my experience. .

HTS is what i will be putting in my truck when i get the funds i am going with the TC VB billet input and laminated flexplate :) should just about complete my truck

I recommend no more than 60 hp max if you want your trans to last a while like everything else, there are no guarantees. Use the smarty on the 60 hp setting with timing and you should be alright. You do not have your sig. filled out so I do not know what year truck you have or how many miles on your truck. Before the smarty though I would recommend that you change trans fluid and adjust bands.

sorry it's a 2004. 5 4x4 3500 with 22,000 miles 3. 73's lsd its a bone stock 4-door longbed all I've done is removed the silencer from the turbo and Installed a 2" leveling kit and Hummer H2 rims and tires and wheels

I ate my TC with Smarty on 5 (90HP).

My TC is good to 800HP. The VB adds line pressure which will break the 2nd apply lever. On level 7 (130HP) everything is good and tight. The weak link is the shafts, but I don't do boosted launches or locked shifts, so everything should be good.

My transmission had 5K on it when the TC, VB and 2nd gear lever went in.

Thanks, I just don't want to worry about my transmission nukeing on some Mountain pass and I'd like to add a set of towing twins and some better Injectors and a Pac Brake

Playing with my smarty today with 24ft cargo trailer about 7000lbs roll into the throttle hard at all causes tqconverter to shutter in lock up on level3 backed down to 30hp with timing shutter is all but gone you have to be real aggresive on the throttle so just as I thought there will be a updated trans in my future, mileage on level3 playing a bit (how can you not, damn that smarty wakes it up)appears to be up about 1. 5mpgs it will be interesting how much differance level1 does powers great Randy

I'm considering a GB tc/vb for my 05 with the Juice and don't think I'll be putting much more power to her for money reasons(new baby). I haven't called yet but as far as install goes when putting in a vb how involved is it to update the band apply strut and anchor, piston, apply lever? Basically do you have to tear the transmission apart or can they be replaced when doing the vb. I'm trying to keep expenses to about $2-2500 if that's possible. Thanks Ryan.

If you are chaning the TC - no problem. Changing the apply lever requires removal of a plug inside the bell housing then removal of the retaining pin with a magnet. So you have to drop the transmission to change the apply lever if all you want to do is a VB (that could otherwise be done without dropping the transmission).

That was my justification for frying my TC - had to drop the transmission for the VB and might as well do the TC while at it. :D

Whole job from start to transmission refill for my son and I was 4 hours. A piece of cake.

so whats the best place to go to get the work done??? ATS is close but I want the best setup I can get

I would recomend talking to Dusty at HTS, I have been running his trans for 2. 5 years the only problem I have had has been twisting up billet shafts because it holds so well . He does a great job building them and they will handle the power.

I tow my first gen truck to all the DHRA races with my race truck it does a great job towing and fantastic on the track. Most of the faster trucks in my area are running his trans. If you want the best I think you will be very happy with HTS . Give them a call 616-897-6237 or check out their website www.htstransmissions.com
