Thanks Carlton,

Having followed the whole discussion, this is news to me. Are you saying a lockup controller (such as the ATS Commander) is redundant because under engine braking the TC is sent a lockup signal? Or is braking from brake pedal application? Are you saying no lockup device is necessary on the 04. 5's?

Also, is there a date available yet for when the new thrust washer went in on the 04. 5's? I have a build date of 7/04 so I assume I am OK, but would like to be sure.

This post was found in another thread but it was never answered, could someone please answer this question? or is there a known answer?

just a bump post but, does anyone have an answer???? a guess???? or know who does have the answer????

I am thinking of building my own transmission, and I would like to know if I should be concerned with this thrust washer or not. I've built several GM's (the old 350) I am pretty mechanically inclined, and I believe I can do the job as well as any one else. I have access to a 48RE that was in a 04. 5, it was rolled and totalled, and I will be getting this transmission to rebuild.

ATS should probably know.

I, also, believe that Bill Kondolay from Diesel Trans. Technology (DTT) wrote an article about the thrust washer problem. You may want to give him a call.

Thanks Buffalo Joe,

I did read that long thread about the exhaust brake and the 48RE transmission, that is where the quote came from but no one actually answered the question. When I get started with the rebuild I will be contacting ATS and/or DTT.

Thanks Again

I followed the Carlton thread pretty close , here's what I came up with.

Through the testing procedure they were finding that even though the lock up signal was sent to the converter it didn't neccessarily lock up so they had to write some more software to make sure this was happening. The thrust whaser was a big issue, DC will not give the build date when they started to put the thrust washer in some say around 07/04. Good luck on the build up . Curious to know if that one has the thrust washer in it when you tear it down
