New Class 5 hitch and hensley here

I have a 98. 5 with the 47RE and will not hold up to heavy towing. Does anyone tow heavy with the '03 48RE? I would like to know the reliability on it.

I saw a comment on one of the xxx web site threads that the 48RE was where either one of the 2 major rebuilders was a year ago.

The rebuilders have progressed much beyond the 48RE as I understand it.

Our club went to a Dodge dealership and asked what the difference between the 47re and 48re was. SOME internal differences, but still have major leaks as I understand it.

The dealership implied that you can upgrade a 47re to a 48re sometime after the 48re's get into a normal production flow. $ were probably going to be $2k range, but that is NOT a firm # at all.

for 2k a after market woud be better bang for the buck. At 2 k plus 1k for a converter your are almost aftermarket price. And not near as good.

upgrading 47RE

The case on the 48re is different as well as the extension housing on at least the 2wd. To upgrade the 47re to 48re would require the transplant of internals. The 47re with DTT upgrades and converters are holding up well. DTT already has some and is working on more upgrades for the 48re as well. Dodge followed DTT and went to 5 clutches in direct in the 48re, so DTT bumped it to 6, Dodge went to 6 in the OD clutch and DTT is retrofitting the 47re with 6. (requires special parts. ) And so it goes, Dodge builds it, we make it better.

having to be patient

Haven't been able to get my wife out of it long enough. :( Hard to pull trans at 70MPH. Converter and other parts in works, then the grinning begins. :D
