48RE transmission rebuild tips

What can I have the local transmission shop do to my transmission to beef it up and make it last longer. I took it to him today and he said second is where the problem is. Showed me some fine metal on the magnet and said this is the metal 2 is made of. Am I getting BS'd?? Second was slipping but my question is WHY did it go bad?? If we dont know that then how do we keep it from happening again?? What upgrades can I get local joe to do? It is a very reputable business, been around fpr 32+ years. I think that shows something... What do you think?

Can't think how he can trace a particular debris on the magnet to "2nd"? But while you have the trans out, definiteily get an aftermarket valve body or put a Trans-Go shift kit in there. I would also do an aftermarket converter upgrade too. The 48RE already has an upgraded gear train, so not much to do there...

The second gear band is not metal, its clutch material like the clutches. Thats a rather idiotic guess as to where the metal comes from. Its not unusual to see that on the magnet over a period of time.



Definitely a shift kit or custom VB, billet lower stall higher efficiency TC, billet front servo cover and possibly servo if leaks are found, billet 2nd gear band strut, anchor and actuator.



Better clutches will last longer and the newer seals are always a good idea. That will firm it up and make a really, really, good unit.

I didn't go for the metal on the mag. I had the dealer service the transmission 40K ago @ 50K. But I want to have this thing fixed so I don't have to mess with it again. I tow a Boat that goes about 3500# and don't think I should be having these problems. I tow it 180 miles each way 5-6 time a year max.

If he doesn't know how to beef up your transmission, get your truck out of there asap!!!



Diesel auto trans require billet or laminated flexplates, billet input shaft, billet or reinforced band and clamps and levers, 3x disc billet torque converter, new clutches and steels and most of all... a new valve body that will work with those new hardware components.



The VB is the heart and brains of the system and will make or break the reliability of the rebuild.



Take it to a reputable 48RE transmission rebuilder...



For example, in my area... Source Automotive is the best of the best. They eat, breath, etc diesels and they own trucks just like ours. They put all of their performance parts on their own trucks and test, test, test. They can rebuild a 48RE to tow and drag race and last in the 100k miles plus while beating on it...

I won't go as far as the OP need billet shafting, Now about the material on the Magnet , to pin point the exact source would only be a guess, until it was tore down and look over, some material is normal. .

be sure he put the thrust washer in . The earlier models didn't have them installed. just in case you want to install a exhaust brake
