kinda like getting into an automatic and looking for the clutch while putting your foot though the floor.

Or worse, since the brake pedal is wider, stomping the brake pedal with the intent of pushing a clutch in...

But I wouldn't know anything about that... :-laf

Back in the 47RE days the Cummins was detuned quite a bit with the auto... . around 420lbft if memory serves me. The 6 speed got the real deal. My 01 and 03 were sticks because of this. The PSD's and Dmax's with auto's got the same motor as the sticks... 500lbft. I never had overheating issues with 3 Ford auto's... just less mileage empty or towing... 10-15%. The clutch fans only engaged on "big" hills just like my 06 Cummins which will climb to 210-215 according to the gauge and the Edge monitor which is nothing but a duplicate of the factory gauge.
I think your high temps are caused by using a program (Edge) which cause high EGT as a norm, that is why you need a sensor for the EGT when running chips. The stock Cummins has enough power for loads at max GCWR's from the factory and don't need chips unless you want to race or sled pull which are beyond stock capability.

actually i have the same temp issues, when towing a heavy load. egts get to the 1200 mark real fast, and the rad temp stay's at 200,frequently hit what i estimate to be the 210 mark. the fan kicks in to cool down like it should, and the temps arent a problem, just not what i'am used to. my 02 ford has a u. s gear cyclone fan on it,the fan kicks in at the 205 mark, but even under the same conditions as driveing the dodge, seldom does.

I do not think I have high temps whatsover. 210 climbing a hill with a total weight of 21K is fine with me. The Edge box is set on one or two. The truck runs at 195 day in and day out according to both temp gauges without nothing but me in it so 210 with a heavy load up a hill seems just what they engineered. It goes right back to 195-200 once the hill is gone.

21K is max and if the fan is on only for a few minutes than I would consider that normal, but the 05 GMC DMAX 3500 I was stuck with before I retired constantly ran with clutch fan on & off, even with 70* ambient on flat runs at 70 MPH. The GCWR was 10000# and the allison trans was a dog robbing power from the supposedly powerful DMAX, just try and accellerate to pass and you will know just how bad it (allison) is. I hope the new 6spd. aiason trany for the 6. 7 cummins doesn't do the same.

Hate to beat this horse, but a short while back there was much discussion about a magazine article about a tow contest between the D-Max, Ferd, and CTD. As I recall the D-Max was the winner, the Ford and Dodge lagging. It was a spirited discussion, and I believe the not unanimous conclusion was that the D-Max may have had an unfair advantage because of the extra gears. I'm not a racer, so I don't care.

I agree that four gears is all we really require , but a fifth gear would be nice. :)

Dont forget the D-Max 1-ton dually came in at 7,500 lbs. My 05' 3/4 ton weighs that much. My guess is I have a little more truck under my but than they do. At least the Ford has a heavy duty chassis and a straight axle front end. I still have and always will HATE V-8 diesels but the D-Max is BY FAR the least heavy duty. If I wanted something fast and GM Id buy a Vette :D

I don't think rear gearing was the same in all three. The V8s are FASTER period. But they don't (torque charts show it) build low end grunt like a inline does. Also their considered LIGHT DUTY diesel engines and the Cummins is a MEDIUM duty engine(based on hours at peak rpm between overhauls)

Couldnt have said it better. But all you hear them say is they can beat us in a drag race... ... GO AHEAD NEXT TIME WE'LL DRAG RACE WITH 30,000 LBS BEHIND US UP A SLIGHT GRADE!!!!! What you cant keep up Im sorry V-8 boy I guess my 6cyl just has more A** than your larger displacment and 2 xtra pistoned machine... . Oh on second thought I shouldnt apologize You should. Sorry for the rant I just agree with DP that this is often overlooked.

My buddy has a 05 Dmax and can get any more than 14mpg highway... he is sorta disappointed as he was getting 20 with his 91 CTD... he has 28k on it... any ideas?

He's really not happy since I get better than his truck, and I'm spinning 4. 10s.

Idea sell the D-Max and buy a nice used 91 CTD :-laf :-laf

Before I bought my current truck I test drove both a 48re and an Allison. I'll take the Allison over the 48 any day... just too bad it's got a D-max infront of it. I'd still prefer an Eaton 9spd tho.

I drive for a neighbor every now and then. That POS '05 (maybe '06) PS of theirs is now the reason I might never buy an auto. I wanna drive it into a tree everytime I jump in it. And don't get me started on that worthless "tow command" brake thingy.

the allison doesnt handle the low rpm torque any better than the dodge auto. throw anything over 50/70hp chip on a Dmax and it slips...

never mind the fact that its twice as expensive to repair and mod. if i recall your options for aftermarket parts are also pretty slim
