Just returned from a 4500 mile RV outing with new 2003 HO 3500. The truck has 9000 miles on it now. On the way, to work last Monday it failed to shift into the high gear then failed to go into OD. Local Dodge dealer has had it for 3 days and still could not find the problem. This is pretty upsetting to me seeing I have only had the truck for 5 months and only has 9000k miles on it. Has anyone else has experienced this problem and if so can you tell me what the problem was? I have about given up on my Local Dodge dealer to figure it out.

P. S = Pulled a 25 ft 7000lb 5th wheel on the 4500 mile RV out just before this problem started.

Thanks

Sounds like a Governor pressure solenoid/or Governor pressure switch problem. Is the Check engine light on? The dealer tech should have checked the actual and target governor pressure with the DRB. Ask if these values were O. K. These two items are very common to go bad in all RE transmissions.

Thanks for your help / I did see a red light flash on an then off in the upper left hand corner of the dash. Not sure what the light was. Dealer did not know either. I will pass this info on to them tomorrow .

Thank again

Well going on 2 weeks now and my local dealer is now going to change the transmission wire harness and modulator. I can not believe it could take this long to find the problem. the sad part is that I have no confidence in them that they have really found the problem. Had my 97 Ram and (47RE) and put 98K on it and it never was in the dealer ship for anything.

A buddy of mine just had this happen to his '03/48RE. It was a dirty electrical connection on the APPS (old style - mounted to the left side of the engine). No codes were set, but this prevented both lockup and OD. Cleaning and re-greasing the connector cured the problem.

As for the red light on the left of the dash, that's probably the Check Gauges light, caused by a known software problem. Every so often, it flashes briefly. The fix is a simple re-flash, but make sure your dealer reads the TSB completely, and disconnects the needed components before flashing the cluster - the cluster can be rendered inop. if it's done wrong.

Not to make light of your problem, but the above quote is why I am loving my 1st diesel so much. How many people with gassers would say only 9000K after 5 months?

Good luck with the transmission. It's a PITA, but at least you still have a long warranty left. A few months from now this will be a bad memory and you'll be back to laughing at mosquit--er, gassers as you pass them pulling their U-Haul trailers or sitting at the pump, filling their puny 17 gallon tanks. A few years from now you'll bellow with laughter as they lament their 70,000 mile disposable engines. And then you'll pop open a beer, kick back and say, "After the game is over I may just zip down to Mexico and pick up a few dozen of those tamales I love, to take hunting this weekend. "

It's a good life.

Crunch

You are correct this is just a fluke and I will get over it. The Dodge Ram &Cummins is still the best truck made. As a engineer I know that electrical problems can be nightmares to find and correct. I have no desire to bad mouth any dealer that are at least making an attempt to fix the problem, and I know they have been quite frustrated also.

Keep smiling we all drive Dodge Rams

;) :)

The older automatics had a temperature sender that was located in the transmission, and would not allow the transmision to go into overdrive or lock-up until temperature was up to "normal". Don't know if these new ones use the same type of system, but if they do, there may be a problem in that area.

Just a thought,

Had the same thing happen to my 47RE. They replaced the wiring harness from the PCM to transmission as the original one was corroded from water. According to them, there is a TSB out for the gassers but not the CTD's, BTW.

They ended up changing out the transmission wiring harness and that seems to have fixed it. Correction on the mileage. Have 9990 mile on her now have had my Ram for 6 months.
