Here I am

48RE'ers, what is your transmission temp?

My friend and I were comparing temps while following down the highway yesterday and they were vastly different. He has regular gauges on the pillar. I think his probe is in the pan. I have a probe in the extra deep pan feeding into the second Pyro port on my Bullydog PMT.

He was reading barely over 100. I was reading 160-180, which is where mine usually is.

So, one of the gauge set ups is wrong..... what is normal??

not necessarily wrong, just measuring different parts of the system.

i still use my idot gauge, but i would think that his would read high for being a regular depth pan and yours cooler for bigger pan more fluid for more heat absorbsion,

do you have gauges on the pillar?

i have read the best spot is the line going to the cooler, what you are read i believe is the temp after cooler, plus what ever heat is abosrbed from the trany.

do a search i have seen many threads on this and where to put the t port in the trans line... .

If both probes are in the pan, his is closer to correct and yours is way high.

In the pan in 90-110 is pretty normal, in the cooler ouput line 140-160 is normal, given your location and time of year.

Both setups are wrong of you are not reading temps from the output cooler line. Too much variation in temps and dependencies on the coolers. Sourcing the input from the cooler output line line gies a much more consistent reading.

cerberusiam, thank you... . I guess that was my ultimate question is what is a "normal" temperature reading in the pan.

I took a 1/2" brass "T" fitting and cut it the long way with one half being the actual "T" and the other half straight through. I hope that makes sense??? Anyhow, I installed my trans temp probe in the "T" section and then filled the inside of the "T" with heat sink grease from Radio Shack. I then liberally coated both the straight through sections of the fitting and using worm gear clamps, clamped the cut brass fitting around the transmission cooler line taking the heated fluid to the cooler. When the temperature around here is sensible (ND), I'll read between 100 and 140 in-town driving and 140 to 180 highway. Towing it will rise to about 195, sometimes higher depending on the ambient temperature. There are days here when it is single digits to below zero where the needle barely comes off the bottom mark. One caveat here. My gauge is a DiPricol electrical gauge (not the full sweep) so my numbers are approximations. For my own satisfaction, I'll take a contact-less Infra-red thermometer with me on the highway to do quick measurements of my trailer hub temps at Rest Area stops. Every once in a while I'll slide under and put the laser on the cooler tube right next to me make-shift fitting and the temp has been consistantly within 3 to 5 degrees of the gauge.

FWIW, when I had mine installed, the probe is in the transmission and I usually show 160 on the highway.

It may not be exact but works for me.
