Doc Tinker?

The value of older education?

I have the chance to buy a 1949 civilian Dodge Power Wagon. It starts easily and runs well. It hasn't been on the road for over a year, and its sitting outside, so I'd like to rescue it. The owner says all it needs to drive safely is a set of rear wheel cylinders, as one of them has stuck and it has been disconnected.

Currently it needs a passenger side rear fender due to rust through, but is otherwise fairly rust free and solid with just minor spots. The paint is faded badly, but is all there with a red body and black fenders. It looks like the remnants of a rear PTO setup are there as well.

I know there are a few members on here with old power wagons, so I am looking for advice on what this this might be worth. Are service parts available anywhere? Thoughts?

PM WM-300 he'll give you some ideas, he has a few and some very nice ones at that, if you're ever out this way look him up and check them out. Seems the price of old PW's is going up, check out E-bay to get some ideas.

Thanks for the info guys! I guess I gotta decide if this is something I have the time and money for right now. It would be cool for sure, but I could see this turning into a fun money pit like my Impala. :-laf I might go take another look at it this week. It looks like I probably have some free inside storage lined up, but its an hour from my house.

I had a '46 Power Wagon--it was a military version of the civilian pickup--looked just like a 1/2 ton 40 Dodge pickup but was 4-WD with a 1/2 ton Power Wagon drivetrain. Vintage Power Wagon has good parts. I had a heck of a time getting wheel cylinders--this was in 1992. You might get yours lined with stainless steel--Hemmings always has some advertisers who do that. Wish I still had mine, but I had to sell it.

Well guys, I went back and drove it tonight. This truck is a beast for sure. One thing I noticed is I could hardly make the turn back into his driveway off the road. Is the turning radius horrible on all of these or could there be something wrong with this one? It has a front locker, but I am almost certain we had it out of 4wd.

It really didn't drive too bad. The unsynchronized transmission takes a little getting used to, but its kinda fun. It looks like top speed is about 45mph. I guess I gotta decide if I need a Power Wagon or not. :)

Yup. your describing a Power Wagon. Turning Radius, ha ha, Huge. Remember this is a no nonsense work truck, built to carry heavy loads anywhere. Buy it, you will never be sorry. Pleanty of help is available at www.dodgepowerwagon.com come over and join us there. The forum is a great bunch of Power Wagon Owners. You will find answers to all your questions. Its like a second home.

Good Luck
