how many hours are these motors good for before rebuild
The "experts", meaning those with real world experience not the "couch" engineers say if they are run at 10 /14 psi of boost or less and the EGTs are ok then maybe 5 to10 K hours before they need some head work, maybe double that for a rebuild.
The real issue with a marine engine is what is effectionately known as "marine age"... . which is greatly affected by factors such as:
How much salt water is in the bilge directly below the engine?
How rusted (from salt water) is the engine?
Has water entered the tubocharger (via a poor exhaust design or exhaust failure)?
Is the boat over propped?
How much water has been pumped thru the injectors and pump?
Is the salt water cooling system maintained and keeping the engine cool enough?
These are factors that are not normally encountered by a truck engine.
