Th-400 question

I’m in the process of transplanting a 4bt in my JC5 from a bread van that I have I also have the TH400 that came in the van as well I’m wanting to reuse my Dana 300 transfer case with this adapter http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_134.htm. My question is will this adapter work with a 2 wheel drive transmission as long as I get the tail housing off of a 4wheel drive TH400? How well do the engines and transmissions work from the bread vans off road?

Yes

Looks like you answered your own question, as to will the transmission work with 4WD tail. Yes.

Driveabilty. The THM-475 in mine has a manual adjustment, where normally a THM400 would have vacuum. The problem is if you spool up the shifts, the dangone thing shifts so hard it jerks sideways and loosens teeth. So for mine, I turned the shifts down to 1300-1450, and the shift is solid, but not hard enough to snap drivetrain.

I bought a brand new cable modulator like the HUMMERS use, and installed it, dangone it was worse. All shifts, my back end jumped to the right and scratched tires. Now we ain't winning any races with this 4BT, that's just transfer of torque. I tried all adjustments with this cable modulator, but with anything more than feather throttle, I was back to the side jump. I have a floor shifter, so if I pull it down a notch or two, I can revv it to the governor and jump sideways on shifts. I suppose if you are playing around, this would be fun, on and off road. But the thought of my teenage daughter driving it , always jumping sideways like that, no way. I RE-INSTALLED the manual modualtor and adjusted it. Turn it down, and good shifts, no jerk, solid, and I believe it will last the best this way.

I'm using 3:50 gears, 35" tires, that equates to overall gear ratio of 2:78-1. Very peppy on take off, good shift pattern, hits high gear 40-42 at those low RPM, and my top end is more than my lifted suspension can adeqately handle. 55-65 is in RPM OK spot.

Low range, it's like a tractor. Yeah that best describes it, a peppy tractor.
