4bt in a wrangler

I have 1996 DODGE W/ 6BT LOVE IT I have owned it since it was new. My wife has a 1999 wrangler w/ 4. 0 I like driving it also to work. I drive 130 miles every day to and from work. Has anybody ever thought about installing a 4BT in a wrangler? I would not do it to my wifes. I would get an older one.





p. s I have 201000. mile on my truck now I work at an construction equipment salvage yard so 4BT come in every now and then.

I know it's been done. I've seen at least one CJ with a 4BT but it's a trailer queen, unregistered.

If you do it be prepared to replace the drive train, axles, trans, clutch, steering box and you might as well replace the frame while your at it too. There isn't much on a wrangler that will hold up the Diesel low end Torque and weight. Your much better off starting with a frame and drive train from a 3/4 ton truck, cutting it down to fit and mating the body to it. That's what I would do.

There's a dude that has been at Thunder in Muncie (at least... ) last year and this year.



He has a Jeep CJ/YJ/FJ (I know it ain't a TJ or an XJ... ) - whatever you want to call it... . with a 4BT in it.



REALLY slick install - If I remember right - it had an HY-35 on it too... .

i found this awhile back, and has been considered an option for my friends, but finding a 4bt around here is terrible, i can buy two 6bt for the price of one 4bt.



this is a YJ, tj is newer wrangler with coil springs, xj is cherokee.

Here are some pictures I took of that Jeep at the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza in 2001. I got to talk to the guy that built this thing, and if I remember right, I think he said it took him about 6 months to build it. He stripped it down to the frame and totally rebuilt it. The 4BT engine came out of a bread delivery truck from a salvage yard.

just something to think about, GVW, there have been a couple of threads latly about ins. cos. not covering wrecks that involved an over wieght vehicle, wouldn't take long to exceed a jeeps GVW w/ a4bt bigger axles etc. Bob
