hey guys,

I've read alot of the KDP information, even though it doesn't pertain to me (sigh of releif). However a company I do alot of work for has a fleet of step-vans with the 4BT Cummins, are they also affected?

Also a read about a few 24-v that have the "old" cover, my uncle has a '98 pusher motorhome 24-v, how (if you can) can you tell if it's the "old" cover? Should he, to be safe, do the fix anyhow?

Thanks guys, Rob

Don't know about the 4BT but your uncles 98 is the year they changed the gear cover and some 98 24 valves have the old style, so yes he should do it.

Rob,

Yes since Father's is early 98 have him check out, that is abot the only way of knowing.

I have early 99 Freightliner going into check around Thanksgiving.

Just killed the KDP on my Mule it was out a little. My Mechanic and I put tab over it.

I did search on KDPs on the 24 valve section several threads over there. I think how the fix was done byCummins on the 24 vavles engine was the timing gear case. I'll go do a search and see if I can find it again.

Reply from illflem with response from Cummins.

" Early in 1998 the gear cover was changed to a 'blind hole' design, which

would not let the dowel pin move out of the bore. If you have a great fear

of this pin coming out, we suggest discussing this issue with your local

Dodge dealer or Cummins distributor, to determine the appropriate action in each situation. "

From Joe D. " Around one or two years ago Cummins extended the housing at the dowel pin and necked down the housing hole diameter past the area where the pin is inserted. I think they should have blanked off the end of the hole, but supposedly the restriction will retain the pin if it loosens. "

Thanks guys

I read and copied the instructions on how to do the fix, just wondering about the 4BT? Is that also a problem?

Thanks Rob

Some people have used the NW kdp jig on 24 valves and 1st gen rigs so it does work. You can't tell if the case is the improved type from the outside.
