goodmorning!

have any of you guy's running straight pipe get(what sounds like a backfire) after a short burst of WOT  can a diesel backfire????... . james...

Back-fire! I don't think I've ever heard that.

I do here a louder rumble where the waste gate opens

along with ALOT of smoke.

I wouldn't think a turbo powered engine would back fire

without some kind of strange accurance or damage to

engine. But now I don't know much of anything anyhow

you see. James, maybe a smart fellow will come along

and educate the both of us.

My guess is the waste gate is opening. :D

It's what WeirCummin said. If you are under high boost, say climbing a hill, and let off on the accelerator you will sometimes get a pop. I don't know if it can cause damage but folks that have loose boost hose clamps usually have the hose blow off the moment this happens.

Not True

That's not entirely true. My truck is way overfueled. Before I advanced my timing my truck would pop and crack and cut out. My girlfriend was with me one night and she said that when I took out she saw a flame. I didn't believe because I too thought that it was impossible. However, she was right. One night before I pulled out in first gear, I tilted my convex mirror up to where I could see the top of one of my stacks. I laid it to the floor so that it did the popping and cracking and sure enough it shot a flame. I couldn't believe it. Now that my timing is advanced, flames are in the past.

Smoker, If you look at his sig. James is running a VA which advances the timing.

James, Does it only happen when you rapidly let off on the throttle ? and at any boost pressure ?

Dean

weircummin:

it only has happned when i put it to the boards and let it run through the gears. when i let off to coast,BANG. its not real loud like a gasser, but will draw my attention. just hope this is normal and nothing is wrong... james...

Try this. Next time you are running thru the gears, as you are about to shift. Let off the throttle alittle slower and let the boost pressure come down a tad, it only talks a fraction of a second. Then shift to the next gear, if your problem goes away it back spooling. The only other thing it mite be and I have no experence with, is your propane system.

Smoker

So let me understand this..... You would get on it, and flames would shoot out of your exhaust? And you "Fixed it"

Just kidding, but flames would be cool.....

Darren

Yeah, it would shoot flames but with a lot of white smoke. I prefer my smoke to be black. Maybe I could run propane in the stacks and light it up to make flames. :D

Let's see, No timing plus LOTS of fuel =Fire + Smoke=:D :D :D Looks like its time to toss out the VA and go to stacks. Who makes a fuel box that doesn't advance timing? :D

So back to the question of potential damage... Although I try not to come off full power without first easing back on the throttle a bit, there are times that's unavoidable. (Anyone else notice the number of idiot drivers that cause all kinds of panic driving situations... ?) It sounds like a gorilla choking and gasping for breath (OK, use your imagination).

But something that sounds like just doesn't sound, well, healthy. Is there anything that needs to be looked out for? Am I getting close to needing that new turbo that's so hard to justify to the wife? I would certainly like to avoid actions that might hurt the Mighty Beast.

I found that mine pops the most when I'm in cruise control under load then release it say for a slow car. I've gotten into habit of keeping my foot on the accelerator when disengaging cruise. It doesn't take much pressure on the go pedal to keep the pop away, just a little more than idle.

ramhead3437's truck is an automatic

james , are you letting off real fast ? if so its the turbo barking , maybe with your straight pipe its louder ? if it is the turbo try not to let up so quick or you'll have another broken part... ;)

backspin is bad

after too many times, the turboshaft can shear

I don't know how many times, or from what boost levels that occurs, but I grit the teeth like this  every time someone zips in front of me when I'm at 25psi+ and have to "get out of it"

intake makes a wow-wow-wow sound like an old wheezing guy :p

can also distort compressor blades and cause then to to hit the housing  that's bad, too...
