I put a 4K spring kit in, per the instructions and adjusted the idle. When We went to move the truck, it choked out. :{ 96 automatic. It also requires throttle to start now.

I know it's the Gov. but I need to know which way to adjust it.

Any Help is greatly appreciated.

Need more info. Were the threads of the studs protruding from the keeper? If I had to guess, I'd say too loose. I think I'd verify the idle setting first, though.

I'd recheck the tightness. I have always done them by the click method. One very faint click, then 2 solid clicks. It's to easy to be inaccurate when your measuring down there.

Start over and double check to make sure you removed everything as needed (shims etc). I always start with initial click plus 2. I bet you have got too much preload on your springs. You have to leave in you idle springs with the idle spring shims (large ones) and discard everything else. Install your new spring seats (make sure you removed all the small shims) then install all the new springs. If you wish to measure it should be around . 045 to . 055 protrustion. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Called Piers before I got back to this post. Mark and I both thought the retainers are too tight. I didn't actually put them in but saw the measurement and myself and the installer agreed on . 055

I think they needed to be . 045 One retainer was tighter than the other (long story) and we took the deeper retainer setting, thinking that would have been safer.

Also, The measurement method was slightly different than what I had explained to the installer, and although it should have yielded the same results, it wasn't EXACTLY the same as the instructions. He measured from the pump case down to the stud and from the case to the retainer, taking the difference as the installed depth. It must have worked pretty well because the numbers turned up as being one click too tight, as mark told me one click was roughly . 017"

Also the Idle increased 200RPM (another inidicator on too tight retainers) over stock rather than 50-60 which I should have noticed right away and didn't.

I should have it tuned tomorrow and on the road.

All in all I had a successful build up. New . 010 gasket, studs, cleaned and tested the injectors, cleaned the valves and installed new seals, valve springs. I have about 10 hours of labor and the truck has run just above idle for almost an hour without any trouble other than related to the Gov springs.

You never mentioned you were 200 rpm higher upon start up originally. You will need to go out atleast one more. We know the measuring was not correct originally and I don't believe the . 045" is correct now either as this isn't adding up? Could the installer have removed or have left in the wrong shims as maybe the shim work was not correct originally also because if you were 200rpm high and backed out 1 click and now have . 045"..... 045" + . 017"= . 062" won't get you anywhere close to 200rpm's higher on original start up????????????

Give me a call or have your installer call me and hopefully we can get this sorted out for you.

I got this hairball straightened out.

One of the retainers was a GOOD deal tighter. And yes, when we spoke I was a bit tense and didn't think to mention the rpm increase.

My friend that installed the kit had one retainer WAY tight. I started over from Zero clicks and tightened the retainers to about . 030" I and another friend BOTH checked the height this time with the same results. We reset the idle (Much closer to what it was before BTW) and all is well. I have about 200 miles on the setup now.

So Mark, How's that thick southeastern Dialect sound LOL

Thanks for the help and dealing with my foolishness.

Those pesty GSK ajustments. Had mine to tight also. Very creepy that they may backoff or something. So an extra click or two should be safe. OPPPHS  Mark set me straight with my 12v One initial click, Then two more clicks on the 3GSK Truck starts and runs perfect now :D

One initial click, Then two more clicks on the 3GSK Truck starts and runs perfect now

That should always be the starting point then go from there, sometimes they need one more click each.

I also found that Jeremey Had one retainer in bewteen a click. I barely touched it with the screw driver and it rotated on around to another click.

Moral... . DO IT YOURSELF

Practice makes perfect. :D

Really, it shouldn't scare anyone off. It just comes down to following the instructions carefully and measuring and recheck your measuring again. ;)
