Klenger - Thanks for the great post and excellent pictures. I'll be getting under my truck tonight to see if that bearing/support looks, "egged," or otherwise worn/damaged. I don't think that would be my problem because I'd suspect that if it was my problem, I'd hear it in every gear, especially the lower gears. But hey, you never know, so I'm going to check it out. Thanks.

Has anyone figured out where this noise is coming from yet? I was hoping that the new clutch and pressure plate would do the trick. But the noise is still there.

Has anyone found the source of this noise yet? Its not my carrier bearing. It seems to do it while pulling a long hill towing the 5er in 4th. (6 speed) It does it around 2,300 rpm. Push down more on the go pedal it stops and if I let off it stops.

Claymike - I haven't determined what causes the noise on mine. I haven't heard it since last September while I was towing the 5'er on vacation. Mine sounded more like a light thud, like a tire starting to go flat.

Mine only does it while I am towing also. But only on long hills like the transmission has to reach a certain temp.

It has been my experience that noises inside a manual trans are do to a gear missing a tooth or a piece of one, or a gear that is not tight on the shaft or is missing a keeper/snap ring.



Noises in fifth are usually due to the overdrive nut backing off. Then there is a vibration in the shifter stick too, and possibly some engagement trouble.

It seems to me if a gear was missing a tooth it would do it all of the time. I have a 6 speed and it seems to do it more in 4th but has done it in 5th.

The noise volume will vary with thrust loads and side loads. When the gears are in a certain alignment, no noise will be produced. If the loads are just right, it can sound like someone is hitting the side of the trans case with a hammer. Noise level also depends upon the angle of the gear face and the straightness of the teeth.



If you have a bad or worn bearing in the case, you will get noises as well. Usually draining the case and having a magnet in the oil stream will show metal particles evident of a problem. The color of the particles also will help diagnose the problem.



On a side note, most diesel Rams will produce a tapping noise while the cruise is engaged in fourth or fifth. Something in the throttle pedal or linkage assembly rubs or vibrates against something else. Engage the cruise and when the noise starts, hold your foot gently against the left side of the go pedal and the noise should go away. This little noise left me paranoid that something was wrong with my engine until I verified it was the "cruise pedal rattle".

Pedal Noise...

I figured out the accelerator pedal noise driving my truck home from the dealer. This 4th gear noise that claymike and I are talking about is not the same. Mine seems to be a little different than his. Mine sounds like a tire going flat, and a slight thump thump thump, that progressively gets a little louder. Never really loud and not a bang. I can't feel it in the pedal, floor, shifter, or anywhere. And it did go away when I floored it, although that was not my 1st instinct. The first couple times I backed out of it and it went away. Mine has only done it about 4 times total.
